G A R N E T M I L L I S O N

Pearl was always viewed as the weakest of us.

My parents always talked about her when we were leaving after holidays, claiming her parents should have done a better job of making sure she was great, like Diamond. I guess it might seem stupid or cheesy, but I actually think she is the strongest. She has a heart and it seems some of our family could use a bit of one for themselves. I guess that I am more like she is than anyone, which is why I am absolutely terrified of her dying in the games. It's not only a prediction of my own fate if I am ever in the games, but there is also the tiny issue that her dying would make everyone realize that the new weakest link is none other than little Garnet Millison.

Up until now, my parents have claimed that I just haven't had as much time to practice, that I'll get there eventually an who knows, maybe they are right. I hope they are, but I know I'll never be great, like Diamond, but these days I'm not even so sure my cousin is as great as everyone likes to think. After all, a real warrior would jump at the chance to be in the games anyway, especially if doing so would give the added bonus of saving her own sister's innocent soul.

Is that unfair? Wishing Diamond would have volunteered? It's not that I don't have fate in Pearl, I do. But she is the one I have always sat with at family gatherings. She is the one I don't have to impress. If she dies, I'm all alone, and honestly, I blame Diamond.

There is no denying that Millison blood runs through my veins. Other than my mother's brown eyes, I look like my father to a T. A square chin, small, pudgy lips, and thick eyebrows are all things my father has given me that I really, really wish he hadn't. I can't even wear a hat without people thinking I am a boy. For this reason, I make it a point to always have a skirt on, and ever since Mother has allowed it, I have painted my lips and my eyelids and grown out my blonde hair and done just about anything to ensure people that I am a girl, and that they can stop daring other girls to flirt with me and then pretend to be shocked that I'm not a boy, or ask me how many girls I've kissed, or ask me why I'm not on the wrestling team.

I don't wear much jewelry, but only because everyone in my family is a jewelsmith that thinks they are clever for giving me something that is made of the deep red shade that I was named after since it coincides with the month in which I was born, January. I sort of wish my parents had been a bit more creative when naming me. Did they not think about how many other jewelers in our district were naming their children after whichever stone they happened to be holding in their hands at the moment? They had two nieces that were named Diamond and Pearl when my mother was pregnant, for Ripred's sake. The Shore family has countless amounts of children and relatives, and all of them were named after stones. (They probably had a Garnet or two in there somewhere, right?)

I'll admit I liked my name when I was younger. I liked that I matched my cousins, since they were the closest things to sisters I had as a child. In fact, I was a pretty lonely child. I was quiet and I didn't make friends easily, so I basically spent most of my time playing in the woods. It wasn't rare that I would drag a bird with a broken wing up to my house and nurse it back to full health, and that hasn't changed to this day. (My room still has a metal cage hanging from the ceiling in the corner furthest from my bed.)

It wasn't until I started gymnastics in the third grade that I made my first actual, real-life, lasting friend. Her name was Pillar and, like me, she was from a family of careers that expected her to be greater than she felt she could be. She told me I was really good at tumbling and I absolutely loved her bar routine. We've been inseparable ever since. In fact, when my parents are getting insufferable, I spend the night with Pillar and she does the same when her family is being mean to her.

I love her to death, but the idea that pretty soon she may be the only living friend I have on this earth makes me want to cry. Which isn't saying much, since I cry at the drop of a hat, but I think losing Pearl would take a chunk out of my heart and my future that I just don't think I could mend. So, the only thing that makes sense is that she wins and comes home. I know things won't be the same. I know she will have to live by even stricter rules than before, since both her and her mother would be victors, but I would take what I could get.

I would rather have a slightly altered version of Pearl Millison than an empty shell that happens to have her face.
