Her mother's last name was Stroud, that was all the girl was ever told about the parents she never knew. It was not important, the blonde woman with the bright eyes cooed, stroking the back of her head as she buried her face in the woman's shirt. It was soft and warm against her cheeks that seemed ever cold in the bitter winter's winds. It was safe and comfortable because that was all she'd ever known. If Ms. Stroud had ever held her as a child, it was not as right as this because this is where she belonged. 

Nearly a decade had passed before the blonde woman called her forth once more. Her eyes held a guilty light as she stood next to the sobbing wretch she'd seen on television near moments before. The wretch hugged her and pulled her to her chest and while she wished to push her away the words she spoke froze her like winter's cruel gales. Oh how you've grown, darling, I'm your grandmother. Not the one who had died when she was ten, no the mother whose last name was Stroud's mother. 

And the blonde woman with the bright eyes cried too when they told her he was going to die. 

A brother she never knew.

The girl wept too.
