The atmosphere of the Capitol early in the morning is different. A mix of quietness and the general hyperactivity of the citizens. The busyness remains in the air like a sickly smell you can't get rid of. I wonder if this city ever sleeps; last night I was kept awake from the roaring crowd a couple blocks down. Lord above knows what they were cheering so ferociously about. I assume it's something to do with the games. They all seem so passionate about them.

As I step into the elevator, alone, I realise that I'm running later than usual. Normally, I have Zeki by my side and we wander down to the training centre stations together. The feeling of being alone in a place of luxurious and advanced technology makes me feel stale. Am I worthy of being here? Probably not. Especially considering I'll be dead in days from now.

My finger presses the ground floor button with elegance and I hold onto the cold metal railing as the elevator moves down the shaft. It's incredible. It's fascinating. It's all so perfect and dandy, yet back in every single one of the districts, we each suffer. We suffer with each day, because each day brings something new to moan about. I always used to moan, but after seeing tapes of the Reaping in the lower districts, I'm only just realising how lucky I really am.

But is it luck? If I was truly lucky, I'd be here, in the Capitol, everyday living my life not giving a flying fuck about anything. I doubt I'd have to work. I'd probably be one of those people with the awkwardly large hair dyed every colour imaginable. I'd like to hope I'm not, yet the sad thing is: everyone here is like that.

The elevator comes to a halt and the doors zip open before my very eyes. I step out quickly, still worried that I'll get trapped between the doors and have to have my arm amputated. I've been assured many times that it won't happen, yet I'm always one to be skeptical of everyone else. If there is an 'if', there's a possibility.

I walk into the training centre and I'm amazed when I count twenty-three tributes. Huh. I guess I really was running late today. Perhaps, my Capitolites and district partner thought I was ill? Maybe they just left me there out of spite. either way, the thought confuses me. Of course, there's always the possibility that it was my fault.

Okay. Which stations haven't I done yet. I look around and see tributes at them all, obscuring my view of what they are. I glance up to the ceiling and see the rope ladders. I haven't tried them yet. I imagine that I can observe all of the tributes' work from up there - and with that thought, my hands reach out into the air before me and take a tight grip on the rope.

It takes me a while, but eventually I make my way to top.

Lying on the flimsy rope, I notice that the climbing caused my arms to ache. This feeling was of course familiar to me, yet it reminded me that I was pushing myself. A thought that hadn't been pushed to the front of my mind in a while. I hope I'm growing and becoming more of a threat with all this training.

I catch the eye of the boy from nine, and notice he's staring at me. I pull myself along and clamber further along to make it look like I'm not relaxing up here. I hope he hasn't been looking at me too long - I don't want him to get the wrong impression.

I smile down to him, hoping he's one of the friendly few. He's one of the tributes I haven't seen much of. Is he one of those people that bottles it all up and explodes further into the process? Or is he one of the few that really isn't a threat at all and is likely to trip off his pedestal at the start of the games? No matter which it is, I hope he notices my smile.

What he thinks of it, I don't care.

A routine. That's all this is. Each morning I wake up, put the training outfit on, I walk out of the room. in. Head back to the district nine floor. Sit down and relax. Then head to bed. And the following morning I repeat. Routines were meant to be broken, but in a situation like this it seems impossible. Training is a must, and each station brings for a new survival situation. Fire. I won't ever learn fire, but it seems like Prism has that mastered.

One thing I paid attention to was plants. The girl from eleven was too nice. She offered to help me - and to think she's the enemy. Yet she me how to tell apart. All I have to do is know what to look for. Like the berries. If they're on a purple stalk thing, I need to leave them alone. But if they're on a bush, I can eat them. One day I'll thank her for helping me, but right now that's out of the question. Pride stands in my way. Thanking anyone is beyond anything I'm capable of.

Today isn't any different. I journeyed from the living quarters to the training room, but this time I don't grab a weapon, and I refuse to go to one of those survival stations. Today, I will learn about other tributes. Some of them I haven't dealt with. Some of them I've had runs in with. Marchello. I honestly can't wait for him to die. I can't wait to kill him. Zeki. Well, he might think he can win the games, but he's wrong. He won't win. Nobody will because nobody wins! It's just a life of survival! It's all anyone knows. And fighting is second nature. Surviving will become a third.

My eyes scan the area looking around trying to figure out where to go when I see a girl climbing up on ropes high above the floor. Perhaps she would fall. One less competitor in the games, yet the Capitol would patch her back up and still send her to the games.

Anyone would.

And I would take advantage. Pounce the moment I had the chance. As soon as the gong sounds, I will run towards her; however, she would need to be injured first.

But for now I have Marchello in my eyes. Making sure he dies first. He punched me in the face. He broke my nose, and for that he will fucking pay. A pain surges through my face as I place a hand on my nose. It's still tender to the touch and it hurts. Tears well up in my eyes, but I remember nothing after that. I woke up in my bed. Blood caked to my face. My eyes black. Stained the color of my hair. A battle scar before the games even begin.

My eyes turn back towards the girl, and I watch her from a distance. I watch her climbing, and she seems to be doing well. At least from the looks of it, but anyone can climb ropes - except those brutal tributes that have muscles the size of my head - it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. One hand over another and as soon as the chance is given place your feet on the rope to help yourself. But I prefer keeping my feet flat on the ground. At least for now.

Her eyes meet mine, and I look away immediately. She's just laying there.. Err.. Hanging there without any worries in the world. Like a child shifting through the wind. I can feel the heat rising inside my body as my blood catches on fire. Nobody should have that attitude here. Nobody should fucking feel like all the worries in the world are gone, and for that she'll pay. And to top it all off she's smiling.

Well fuck her.

He looks away as soon as he catches my eye. What he thought of my smile isn't made clear, but I'm beginning to think he's like fire. All he needs is a spark to set him ablaze and make it explode. I don't want him to explode all over me, I'd feel humiliated and weakened.

"You seem like you're enjoying your last few days alive."

What does he expect me to do? I don't want to sit here sulking. It'd just show the other tributes I'm an easy target. I'd only play the "broken and afraid" card for the gamesmakers so I can get a bad score. I frown at him and tilt my head, still pulling myself slowly along the ropes.

"Why shouldn't I be? We should all go out with a bang."

I smirk at my answer. I think it's rather clever, and I'm proud of the way I delivered it too. Although, the pride soon turns to regret and I start to worry. Shit. Now he's got a reason to kill me. Should I have been rude? Probably not. But if he's going to get me going, I won't back down until I've won.

I stare him down - still lying comfortably on top of the apparatus. I blink at him, and reveal narrowed eyes. I pull myself further along the top of the ropes and find myself at the end, forced to climb down. I can feel the breath of another tribute at my feet, probably wanting me to hurry along - so I swing my body around onto the ladder and begin to climb down.

The ladder is cold and is different from the one I climbed up earlier. It has wood in it, making it easier to get a grip with your feet. I'm glad, because if I fell now - in front of him - I know my cheeks would flush red with embarrassment.

I get three quarters of the way down, and push of and jump onto the hard ground. My stomp quietly echoes around the training centre, but I shrug it off. Who cares if they're looking, I bet - hoped - that looked professional.

I turn around and find my gaze locked on the boy from nine. I wonder what will pour lifelessly from his mouth next? I don't want to hear it, but I'll be forced to. It's a shame he's already given up. That, or he's not coping. He's going to give the Capitol a hard time. He'll give them a reason to kill him with mutts or fireballs or falling trees.

Maybe he's just playing - deploying a tactic so that he'll eventually have the upper hand, over all of us.

The thought sends a frosty shiver down my spine.
