Katelyn Persimmon
"We don't want to survive... we want to l i v e."
It was a rough night for Katelyn. Sleep was difficult, as every time she moved in a certain way, a jolt of pain would wake her up briefly before she drifted off again. The warmth from her allies bodies certainly helped keep some of the cold out, but the temperature was not what kept waking her. At one point, she awoke, and found herself unable to fall back asleep. Staring upwards and waiting to see what the stars would hold.
As it had the night before, the sky lit up in an impressive display of green and a few other hues that stretched across the landscape and colored it in varying shades. It was beautiful in its own way, and unlike anything she had ever seen in the sky before. But that beauty was marred by the unnaturally cheerful music of the Capitol anthem, and the seal that faded to show them the first face of the day. The career from four. Katelyn shuddered, and not just from the cold. This marked the second time Lexi had killed someone from that group. That Lexi had killed her district partner had been a conclusion Katelyn had drawn due to simple mathematics.
Thinking back to the hectic end of the bloodbath, she realized that that career pack had been the only people left. While she had crippled the girl from four, Marc and Lexi had had their hands full with the other tributes they had run into the day before. She remembered seeing Levi go down, though she hadn’t seen who had killed him. However, given that it was highly unlikely that his own allies had done him in, and that the twosome had fled as soon as the career from two went down, that left her allies; and since at the time, Marc had been holding a whip, and Lexi’s axe was covered in bits of bone, blood and brain.... Well, it was pretty clear what the career pack had against them.
The second face was the girl from ten, a little wisp of a tribute. The sky faded right after that, and Katelyn felt her stomach tighten involuntarily. Only two deaths? That left thirteen other tributes in the arena besides them. Which was bad. Not just because of the numbers, but because if the games she had watched in the training center were any indication, a lack of deaths early in the week usually meant that the gamemakers would be bored. And bored gamemakers meant hell for the tributes. They had been lucky enough to avoid any monstrous animals thus far, but that could change in an instant. The Rancor. The Scorpion King. The Jabberwocky. Who knew if something of that size was lurking in the arena.
An eye for detail. That came from her mother. A skill refined by years of making pastries look just right. It took a lot of work to make the hundredth tart look as good as the first. And a single observation in the arena could mean all the difference. That being said, she didn’t fault Lexi for killing her district partner. Yeah, it made her sad to lose that link to home, but it also prevented her from having to kill him at some point. It was doubtful that any tributes would want to kill their partners. It was the epitome of shame. She wondered if Marc and Lexi would be able to fight each other if it came down to it. In all likelihood, they’d turn on her before each other.
But not now. Not when they needed each other to survive. Not when Marc was missing a leg. Not when so many other tributes were out in the snowy landscape that surrounded them. Even so, it was a thought that nagged at her, though she swore to herself that it was different than the career pack. Clearly, they were using the boy from district ten, as Mason himself had told her, that was what careers did. The pair from six, they were her friends. Right? No. Her allies. And would remain such until the desire to go home outweighed any bonds they might have formed. That’s what happened every time. Katelyn knew that this year, it would be no different.
Until that time arrived however, she planned to make the most of the situation.

When morning arrived, they began to trek northwards, having decided that it would be in their best interests to put some distance between themselves and the forest. It was difficult moving along with Marc’s condition, but between herself and Lexi, not to mention the cane, they managed to do it. All the while, Katelyn found a new sense of respect and pity for the alliance they had already fought twice. It must have been hard going for them as well after Lexi had killed one of them at the bloodbath and then Katelyn had severed the leg of the career herself before Lexi had killed the same career the day after. She felt pity alright, but after nearly dying at their hands, she decided that it was all justifiable.
As they walked, Katelyn kept quiet, feeling like a third wheel to the district six tributes. Those two shared more in common than she did, and it was doubtful that they’d want to discuss anything about district eleven. Instead, she kept a watchful eye on the path in front of them, occasionally stealing a glance at Marc. He was attractive in his own way, but not exactly her type. If she had one. Romance wasn’t something she had ever pursued, she had always expected it to just sort of happen when it was ready to. Then her name had been pulled out of that bowl. So there was that. She knew that every year, a couple tributes paired off, but she didn’t think that was a good idea for her.
Taking the previous year as an example, Katelyn decided that wooing, or being wooed was not in her best interests. Her most recent predecessor, Stella Calloway, had fallen for the boy from eight, and well, he had killed her. That unpleasantness aside, it wasn’t like there were many options for her anyway. Hell, she wasn’t sure how tributes consistently fell for each other in the first place. But she could see it happening. Lexi and Marc hadn’t acted on anything, but they were making eyes at each other, and it seemed like when they huddled, it was for a little more than warmth. Awkward? For her, yes. But if they weren’t going to say anything, then she wouldn’t either.
After some time had passed, they could see a building through the trees. It looked like a castle, but made out of ice. It was possible that some tributes, or worse was lurking in it, but it would offer some respite from the cold. As they approached, Katelyn noticed some footprints scattered around the entrance. And blood. Lots of it. Part of the building seemed to have collapsed at some point too. Looking at the slush that was by the opening, she spotted some bloody pawprints, larger than anything she could think of. It was disconcerting. But a tinging noise brought her away from it, snapping her helmeted head upwards to see a small silver parachute floating down. It was a jar like the one Marc had had in the fight the day before, but it was marked with an eleven.
“I...I think the girl from ten must have died here.” she muttered as she retrieved the tar. If not, then a half dead tribute must have been lurking nearby since there hadn’t been any cannons yet over the day. Grumbling to herself and wincing from the exertion of moving her arm, Katelyn drew one of her throwing hatchets out and looked at it. Fighting was not her strong point, judging by the dismal show she had put on against the career pack. Hell, the only reason she had been able to kill the girl from three was because the tribute had already been missing two limbs and all she had to do was swing downwards. Maybe she’d have more luck with these things.
There was a sudden crunch from the area opposite where they were standing, and Katelyn jumped in surprise, throwing the hatchet in the general direction of the noise. They weren’t alone. "I...I think I know what killed her too." she gulped as the rest of the mutts came into view.
