He doesn't know how much more of this contemplative silence he can take. It's too quiet on the train, minus the odd occasional thud of something falling to the floor, or the gentle clink of silverware swaying from a similar motion. To make matters worse, whenever Nat turns around his brother appears to have taken to giving Nat long, thoughtful looks, and it's driving Nat crazy. He contemplated staying in his room as a kind of literal finger to his brother, but Leon would probably break in if he wanted to. If he knew how. Stupid older brothers with no sense of personal space.

But if he thinks about it too long he recognizes that a part of him doesn't actually mind the constant presence of his older brother at his side, even if it currently grates the upper level of his consciousness. Even when we're fire...

Nat sits now in the lounge, poking at a plate of hot food that looks strange with all the weird things on it, but smells delicious. Leon is seated at a nearby table, sipping a cup of something thick and creamy with his gaze focused on the outside world flying them by - contemplating, maybe, his brother seems to do that pretty often nowadays.

He eyes Leon, silently wondering where Gunner and whatshisname Preston were - nowhere nearby, obviously. Nat's been keeping an eye out for the longest time now. Wonder what they're like. He has no idea who they are, really, besides the fleeting glimpse he'd gotten of their faces before he was led to that fucking tiny room in the justice building, where goodbyes were had and tears could not be shed.

"If you came to say goodbye, goodbye."

"Tell me everything."

And all that time he couldn't say the words that meant the most.

Goodbye, I love you.

"You should eat something." Leon has his mask back on, and he sounds bored even when Nat recognizes the slim line of tension running across his brother's shoulders; Leon's waiting for the other two, too, even if he wouldn't say so. Maybe he's even wondering which of them he'd fail. Yeah, I know you, big bro. You can't hide from me. Nat clears his throat and pushes his plate a little away. Leon hears the scrape and turns to look at him with half a smile. "The food tastes as good as it smells, promise."

"Well, it looks weird." Reluctantly, Nat pulls the plate back and takes a bite of it anyway, chewing slowly as flavors blossom across his tongue. Eyebrows raised, he scrapes the rest of the plate clean. When he looks up, Leon is still watching him with some stupid expression on his stupid face. Nat's own face devolves into a scowl.

"What?"

His brother starts. "Nothing." Leon returns his gaze to the outside world, and after giving him a final glare, Nat studies the buffet table, contemplating what he should try next.

"Wonder where the other two are," Nat mutters, glancing at the silent door.

"Give them their space. They'll come over when they're ready."

You didn't give me any space, Nat thinks childishly, then shakes his head and picks up a piece of fruit to stop his running mouth instead.

GUNNER LA TORRE

i step up in the game
and i burst that bubble

Boys on boys on boys. This year's Quell twist meant all twelve girls could have been Reaped from District Four and who's on the train with Gunner La Torre? Oh, who even fuckin' cares.

She's not on a train full of teenage girls who haven't checked Gunner La Torre off their bucket list yet, that's what.

There was some drama while the names were being drawn, mostly involving a lot of tears and brothers trying to volunteer for brothers when they're not allowed. Victors or whatever. It didn't seem even half as relevant to Gunner's interests as Iggy's ass (which she was told, in no uncertain terms, she was not allowed to bring as a District token), so she didn't pay it much attention. It looked so sappy sadsack godawful depressing and —

The druglord's daughter is already a little tispy... mostly because she left The Ferryman's bar that way this morning and it hasn't quite worn off yet. Night-drunk into the day and where has it gotten her? A one-woman dance party in the first empty room she could find on the train. "Sometimes I think sitting on trains, every stop I get to I'm clocking that game!" Tinkering around with the electronics, it wasn't too difficult to get a little music going and so for the last twenty minutes she's been jumping around on the mattress while a strange pair of headphones threaten to fly off her ears in response to each landing. "Everyone's a winner, now we're making that fame! Bonafide hustler making my name!"

It's hunger that drives her out of hiding and into the dining cart, which — exactly as she thought — is inevitably filled with sappy sadsack godawful depressing penises. The headphones are still covering her ears though, so she keeps bouncing around haphazardly to the beat as she reaches out to pluck a few bites of food from the buffet line. "All I wanna do is —" While the lyrics are only half-intelligible because of the seafood shoved into her mouth, the sound of the trio of shrimp forks she hurls into the wall to match the musical gunshots echoing in her ears rings loud and clear. "— and —" The forks hit bullseye, all three landing right between the eyes in the painting of a man Gunner doesn't recognize, but she throws her hands up in victory anyway. "— and take your money!"

Popping another fancy cream puff of some sort into her mouth, Gunner whirls around and catches the eyes of two of the guys she's been avoiding. With a shrug she pulls the headphones off her ears and licks some stray food off her lips. "What? Because what you're doing looks so fun?" She could have been on this train with anyone, but no. Gunner gets the wonder twins. And not the fun kind.

I wish I could write down in words how much regret I had for everything I didn't- or wouldn't- do in my life; who could blame me, though? Thirteen year olds haven't seen what the world has to offer, my father had told me once while fishing at the seaside where the sun melted into the horizon and the air smelt of grated salt and seaweed. If I squinted, I could almost remember the way his smile crept around the corners of his stubble and how the rays of light danced in his pupils like a Siren's song. As strewn as his mind was, I had almost fallen off of the boat when he finished the saying.

For the record, neither have adults.

Now was not the time nor place for reminiscing, though, and warily, my vison struggled to return to focus. For a multitude of minutes now, I had sat on the cushioned surface of my bed, wondering exactly when or if I would get to say goodbye to my parents. That should be my first thing, I vaguely thought through the haze of my mind; being the stubborn-ass kid I was, I blatantly refused to see my parents at the Justice Building. How selfish of me, to leave them thinking that I hated them when, in reality, I hated myself.

Pushing my thoughts aside, I let my vision trail down to the paper in my hand, a small hope that I could get my thoughts out flickering deep inside of me. However, once my charcoal orbs danced across something white- a colour of minuscule importance to me- I frowned at the fact that my fist was enclosed around the paleness of the sheet. So much for writing.

Quietly, I stood. Perhaps this was a sign to grow the hell up and go socialize with the people that could kill you in the days to follow- I mean, what did the phrase 'don't play with your food' mean to them anyway. Allowing the paper to fall out of my hand and onto the sheets of the bed, my feet led me to the door and out, making their way to where the others had most likely congregated and would stay for god-knows-how-long.

With shaky breath, I blew a strand of hair out of my face, straightening my shirt and walking hesitantly into the dining cart. Despite it being somewhat rude, I made no attempt to make my presence clear, instead moving in favour of staring at the others in the room half-heartedly. They both seemed to be of older age than I and damn was that in some way intimidating. Every part of me knew that while they were both still children- save the girl, possibly- both of them had certainly been alive to see, know, and experience more than anything I could have in the time I had left to spend on this train heading to my certain death bed.

Trying my best to push the idea of my inevitable downfall out of my head, I shifted my weight nervously from hip to hip, a small part of me wishing I could blend into the wall and disappear. In this moment I couldn't help but continue the list I had given up on in my head:

Regret #1: Not appreciating what I had.

Insane.

That's his first impression of Gunner La Torre, because she dances in like she's not got a single damned care in the world, dances in singing at the top of her lungs, and Nat eyes her with a mixture of confusion and interest. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Leon choking quietly on his drink, hints of a smile playing on the edges of his mouth and damn it Leon if you're going to hit on her at least let me get out of here.

"What? Because what you're doing looks so fun?"

"I didn't do anything," Nat says automatically, then winces. That was probably her point.

Leon snorts quietly and gets to his feet. "Gunner, isn't it? Have you any idea where Preston is?" His voice is calm again, tinted with boredom even as he looks the girl over. Nat eyes his older brother. You gotta work on your people skills.

Just as he thinks that, the train door slides open and in comes in the third of them - Preston. Right. The boy - because at his stature he's certainly not a man - has his shoulders curled in like he's trying not to draw attention to himself. Nat glances at Leon, who's frowning and studying the kid, his brows furrowed. What are you thinking?

"Hey, kid," Leon says gently. Then, to the three of them together, "Get some food and settle down. We should have a talk."

Nat raises his eyebrows and glances down at his plate. Yeah, about that. "What are we gonna talk about?" he says, spearing what looks like a little bowtie and nibbling on the edges. Huh. Weird.

"The Games," Leon says mildly. "And you." Leon eyes them, and nods to Gunner. "Why don't you start?"

The little one swears he didn't do anything and both Leon and Gunner snicker in response. She fleetingly wonders if he's lived his whole life like that — in denial — and bets that he has. Anyone too well behaved doesn't know how to have fun. Pity flickers in her eyes, despite the laughter in her lungs.

"Gunner, isn't it?" The old brother asks, infamous just by sitting there, even to a girl like this one. "Have you any idea where Preston is?" She simply shrugs in response: Who's that and why should I know? Do I look concerned? Despite his question about Tributes still missing in action, he's eying Gunner instead of the door and when she glances over at the littler brother, his face says it all: hushed exasperation that can only ask again? Can I leave first?

Usually that kind of look is aimed at Gunner.

The door opens once more and she doesn't turn around, because she knows the inevitable lack of boobs won't be relevant to her interests. Leon, however, greets Preston with an offer to talk about their feelings and Gunner doesn't understand how there can be so much estrogen on a train without any girls. "What are we gonna talk about?" Stealing some sort of funny looking vegetable off of Leon's plate while he's distracted by the newcomer, she pops it in her mouth and gestures in agreement with Nat's question, pointing to him with a bobbing nod of her head. Surely they could find something better to do than circle up and talk about feelings.

"The Games," Leon clarifies, glancing back at the pair of dissenters. "And you," his eyes lock onto Gunner like picking her out of a crowd and she can only feign shock — me?! — as she puts a hand to her heart, "why don't you start?"

Gasping dramatically, Gunner puts her still-blaring headphones on Preston as he oh-so-quietly tries to sneak past her and then reaches out to cover Nat's ears with her hands. "Not in front of the children!" She exclaims loudly enough that they can probably both hear her despite her efforts, eyes wide and jaw dropped open in horror, even as that persistent grin of hers tugs at the edges. "They'll have nightmares."

With a wink at Leon, she drops down into an empty chair and kicks her feet up onto the table, picking at her teeth with a fork. "What do you wanna know?" Her eyes tick from one face to the next to the next and finally she holds up her hands, all ten fingers splayed wide. "Never have I ever wanted to be on this train. I had better things to do, y'know." If they play along, she already knows who'll win this game. After all, the little one swore he's never done anything.

Nat startles when Gunner places her hands over his ears, her voice cutting through her efforts to keep him in the theoretical dark. Her hands were cool, fingers pressed a little too hard on his cheekbones, and Nat struggles against the urge to bat her hands away. Jeez. What's wrong with you?

"I'm a little old for nightmares," Nat grumbles, shaking his head when Gunner lets him go. He scowls at Gunner and his brother, muttering, "Though I'm probably old enough to have this one." Leon's lips twitch upwards like he heard, but he folds himself gracefully onto a chair and props his cheek onto his fist.

"What do you wanna know?"

Nat folds his arms, slouching in the chair as Gunner holds out both her hands in some sort of faux-surrender. Yeah, neither have I, he thinks, rubbing his jaw tiredly.

But he has.

When Leon came back, he's had dreams of this - of walking the same path as Leon, of coming home like Leon, of making his family proud. Making Arissa, making Leon proud. I don't want to be second to the both of you anymore. Though the right term for that would probably be third, considering that there are actually three children in the Krigel family. Even knowing that intellectually, Nat has a hard time wrapping his mind around his older siblings being separate people. You've always been so close and I'd always been... straggling, left behind.

"We've all had better things to do." Leon sounds bored again, his chin now resting in the palm of his hand as he eyes Gunner with some interest. The older Krigel smiles, and says, "Never have I ever seen someone so happy on the train, though."

Nat stares at his brother in slight horror.

You're playing along.

Damn it, Leon. Nat scowls, folding his arms. "Never am I ever playing that game." Leon snorts quietly, but he's smiling when Nat scowls at him. His brother turns back to Gunner.

"What do you, and what don't you know? If I have a better grip on your skill-set I'll be able to... ah. Sell you to the crowds, for lack of a better word." Is Nat hearing things or is that a note of irritation leaving his brother's tongue?
