What I happened to do was for the best. I was a nobody in this shit hole of a district. I was just a girl whose brother was killed by a peacekeeper wanna-be and whose parents decided that my life was insignificant enough to challenge the likes of the capitol. They got off scott free and I've been put into the system and in foster care. "Hmphh. That's life."

For the time being, my feet swing as I sit in the chair. My mind completely buzzing with the names of my district partners. Orion Hammerfell... All I know about him is that he's related to the buff guy from the last games. A family member of someone that was seriously feared so much and then the Johnwayne girl. Her brother was also in the previous games down the line. The other girl is completely new to me and thus I have no quarrel with her name. The only thing I do notice is that I'm the youngest in this quad squad. I will be looked upon as nothing but fresh meat to them. If only they knew that I will not back down from a fight. If only they knew what tortorous ways I was brought up in and survived each one. They would think of me in a new light.

Until I meet them, they will probably already be plotting my demise.

Outside the door to this tiny room, I can't hear anything. It's completely silent and the silence is getting to me in a new way. I don't like it. Silence is not golden. This place is a torture chamber. There needs to be some form of noise because my ears are starting to ring so loudly that I think my ears are going to bust.

The chair is scooted against the ground as I stand up quickly, letting the noise echo throughout the room. I won't have any visitors becasue noone is here for me. I have no parents. No brother. I have a few people in the guard but they are too busy doing patrol to even want to come to see me. To them, I'm probably just a sorry peice of capitol meat now off to the slaughterhouse.

"Damn you all." I form the words out loud and go to the side of the wall that has a tiny window in it. The light from outside floods in like no other. What awaits me in the capitol? What awaits me when I get on the train? It better be something amazing because I'm risking my life for something better. Maybe if I was to win these games, they would let me join the ranks of the peacekeepers faster. What better kind of officer to have then one that survived the games. A real challenge that shows my loyalty to the likes of the fighters and rule enforcers. If I play my cards right, I just might bank in these games.

A pounding on the door from behind me actually has me raising my eyebrows and before I can even answer, a uniformed officer is coming in and the look on my face dampens. "Alright. Ready to go. Don't know why anyone bothered to keep me waiting when no one will see me."

The Reapings were a source of disgust for Max that no amount of Peacekeeper indoctrination had been able to erase. He had no children of his own whose names would be placed in the bowls, thank god, but there were too many years of deep-seated resentment towards the Career districts to whom the Capitol showed favor by turning a blind eye to their illegal tribute training schools. Watching each of his sisters standing in the crowd, holding their breath hoping not to hear their names. Spending 6 years of his own life with that fear dangling over his head, wondering if this year his name would be drawn and he'd be sent into the belly of the beast.

It was a hundred times worse watching the Reapings in the Career district of 2, watching bloodthirsty children competing with each other for the dubious but coveted place as tribute for their district.

Savages, the lot of them. It was absolutely sickening.

Something in the pit of his stomach soured when his protege volunteered from among the crowd and mounted the stage.

He'd always thought Olivia was too smart, too sensible to willingly participate in the spectacle of the Hunger Games. She'd been under his tutelage to become a Peacekeeper, and having 2 years before she'd be old enough to be admitted but insisting on participating anyway, she had seemed to have committed her course.

So much for that.

Max didn't fully know why, then, why he was standing in the Justice Building to see Olivia. There were many words in his heart, and none of them were pleasant or even civil. The disappointment left a bitter taste in his mouth, the anger formed a pit in his stomach.

The Peacekeepers escorting Olivia to her waiting room appeared through the door, startled to see an officer just outside waiting for them and ready to snap to attention. Neither of them had the time to get out a greeting or finish his salute when Max had passed them to barge into Olivia's room, standing in the doorway looking at his former protege with contempt; she stood, apparently not recognizing him.

"Alright. Ready to go. Don't know why anyone bothered to keep me waiting when no one will see me."

He snorted. Max had dared to have high hopes for her, but she had opted to prove him wrong; she was just another typical, bloodthirsty Career vying for her 15 minutes of fame.

"What in the hell were you thinking?"
