Companion to This Isn't The End
His bones felt too heavy to flinch when Abel fell to the ground, blood pouring from the place where his arm used to be and bubbling from his lips; Sam had long since screamed himself hoarse, telling Abel to fight, telling him to run, telling him to do anything despite knowing his brother couldn't hear him.
This couldn't be happening... Sam had agreed, agreed to go and become a Peacekeeper and let the Capitol have him so that Abel would be safe, he was supposed to be safe. Everything he had done, facing down the Peacekeeper firing squad, signing away 20 years of his life, pouring every cent to his name into Abel's sponsorship to send him supplies and protection, his words of advice at the Justice Building; all of it had been for Abel.
It had always been for Abel.
And all of it had been for naught.
Some small part of him that he'd refused to acknowledge had known this was coming; for all Sam had managed to hold onto his naivete for so long, deep down he had known that when Abel had pulled out of his arms and walked around the corner to the train, it would be the last time Sam held him, dried his tears, stroked his hair.
There was nothing he wanted to be able to do more right now, and he couldn't. Sam was powerless to help Abel now, not even offer him comfort in his final moments.
"It's okay, don't cry baby boy, I'm right here," Though through his own tears and the blood on his brother's face, Sam had no idea if Abel was crying too.
Peacekeepers weren't supposed to keep their weapons on them; but, then, Sam hadn't paid any mind to the rules since being carted back to District 2 to watch his brother battle for his life for the entertainment of the Capitol. His pistol hadn't left his side since the Reaping; perhaps an acknowledgement of that horrible truth lurking at the back of his mind.
Even having signed away his own life, Sam had always it written off as being alright as long as Abel was safe. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. Sam wept that he'd never see his brother finish school, see Abel grow up into a man and fall in love and have a family of his own someday. At the end of it all, Sam was supposed to die first, as was the natural order of things, able to rest peacefully knowing the person he loved most would be alright without him.
He brushed the projection of Abel's face with the same tenderness he might have used to dry the boy's eyes, the other hand drawing back the hammer of the pistol and bringing the barrel to his chin, trembling and wet with tears. Closing his eyes, waiting for the cannon.
If Sam couldn't go first, at least they could go together.
