Kitty Keeni

His own fingers wring the blood from his hands, leaving them tingly and cold. Not for the first time Kitty wishes he's home, tucked against his family and watching the fire dance before his eyes, like they had in winters past. For all the bravado Kitty had before the cameras here he's so far out of his depth that a braver heart than his might likely fail.

Kitty's considering the idea that he might not even be alive right now - simply hovering as a dead thing and observing the people around him.

The tributes around him are a far cry from the ragtag group of rebels he'd known - the ones he'd lost... be it to the Capitol or to their own desires. They'd been mute, sick, injured, defiant, angry, self-righteous as he knew them. They'd been at their wits end, stragglers struggling to stay ahead while they were blinded by the false white of the Capitol. In their hunt for disaster, they'd struck gold.

Tributes are different. They're fighters - broken, defiant, different - and Kitty considers the fighter girl, the one with cat eyes, the one he's been following for the past hour.

He pads closer in curiosity, silent on two feet.

There is a point where men can become myths and you think Harbinger Rhodes might be well on his way, Herculean to the point of giving you a moment’s pause in your approach. Nothing impresses you quite as much as yourself and so this small victory on his part does not go unnoticed. Back home you would have casually killed him for the unwitting transgression of making you flinch, but it’s lucky for him that in this new world, this is exactly what you want from him.

Hunkered down at the first aide station, it’s as if he knows your intentions before he’s even met you. Preparing himself for the damage you intend for him to take on your behalf, bandages and antiseptics lay scattered across the table and you pick up a roll of gauze, absently running it through your fingers as you sidle up to him. “If you’re hanging out at the defense stations to try to convince everyone you’re one of the frail weaklings not worth noticing,” you run your eyes up and down the mountain of him, not so much sizing him up as attempting to take him in all at once, “it’s not working.” The amusement lacing your words is sweet enough to be mistaken for kindness, searching for the right foothold in his ego.

If the giant is gentle, you will coax him. If he’s every bit the brute he appears, you will brazenly manhandle him. If he defies your recruitment plans, you will take this Goliath down.

Tossing a smile to the perfectly bait-sized girl on his other side, you play your words off as an innocent joke instead of the sincere truth of your criticism. Can you believe this? Your cross-species eyes say, strange pupils doubling the humor as they accuse Harbinger of being the most unbelievable thing in the room. Not you, no. Unfortunately for everyone here, you are too undeniably real to be made myth.

Despite the necessity of learning how to use weapons and attack, I was at the first aid station with Harbinger Rhodes, the District 11 giant, and we were actually working together. He had ended up being a rather kind and helpful giant, even though he had triggered my first panic attack in the training center, and when he started working with me at our stations, I found myself familiar, comfortable, soothed by his presence. Maybe I felt comfortable knowing that I had someone who looked formidable at my side; maybe I was just happy that I had made some sort of a friend.

We were going through the bandages when a girl with the most enchanting ~~disturbing~~ eyes approached us him. I stayed as small as I could by Harbinger’s side this is not my conversation to be in and watched with my own eyes at the exchange. District 2. Career. Just the words made me shudder, but when she set her own eyes on me with that smile of hers, I wanted nothing more than to slip under the table. There was no way this girl was good news and I didn’t understand why she wanted to talk to Harbinger.

No, the truth was everyone was going to want Harbinger on their side. Did they know that he was about as deadly as a teddy bear? Did they know he used his strength to heal people rather than destroy them? A small smile formed at the thought of people finding out that his drive was not to kill but to go home. My eyes wandered looking anywhere but at the girl who was talking to Harbinger, and I spotted a small boy not too far away. He’s only 12. I gave him a smile before nudging at Harbinger and pointing at the District 6 boy.

Harbinger Rhodes

It's strange. All I'm doing is minding my own business while training for the games. I want to be alone, but it's nice having someone here. Chloe is here too. Knowing that she's from twelve makes life easier because she knows what it's like living in poverty, at least, that's what I'm assuming. Standing with her only makes me want to train harder. Maybe it'll keep me safe for a while, or perhaps it'll only kill me faster. First aid is something I'm good at. Crusader was good at plants, and he tried getting me to understand them, yet they were impossible to learn. All that I had was a chance at healing others. Yeah, it's not easy knowing it won't save anyone.

That's when district two walks towards me with a young boy carefully following along behind her. Chloe shifts behind me, and I feel so alone. Why would two want to talk to me? I'm just a kid from eleven. Maybe they think I'm a brutal monster who can help them win, oh how wrong they are. I have one goal in the arena, and Kirito and Katelyn know what it is. But it doesn't mean I won't attack anyone. No, I know I have to. Yet she makes a joke like I'm trying to hide my strength. In a way, I want to laugh, but part of me holds it in. Perhaps if I have a career on my side, my death won't happen right away. But why me? Why does she want me?

Slowly I stop what I'm doing and turn towards her wondering what I could possibly say or do or anything. My entire life is standing in front of me. All my good moments, and all my bad moments. It's impossible to figure out right from wrong anymore because every single bit of this is wrong. I want to stay silent and keep working on what I was doing although I'll never see the good side of a career again. I just hope she has a good side. Sighing to myself, I look around for answers. Maybe she can help, or perhaps she could harm me. There's only one way to find out, and that's through speaking. "Ahh district two. Tell me, just what the hell do you want from me?"
