"hear no evil"

Having to be the supportive figure to people is hard for anyone, especially a fourteen year old boy with his own problems. No mother to give him maternal care and a father who seems to only know more about the ins and outs of animals, than his own children. Forced to be the one to look out for his little brothers, Lucas has somewhat been deprived from a fulfilling normal childhood that he deserved. Loving his brothers and his father equally, he just wishes his dad would be around the house a lot more. He wants a normal dad that can forget about the past and learn to be a part of the family.

Mirroring his father and the rest of the family, Lucas has adopted traditional features from the Sartorius bloodline. A small mop of brown hair lays rest on the top of his head and his iris’ match the colour of his locks. A reasonable height of 5ft 5 for his age, Lucas’ body structure is typical for anyone near his youth group. Spending most of the time outdoors, the sun has done its work on his skin, tinting it slightly brown. Although lacking in muscle structure, he isn’t a skinny boy, which depicts his life at home; a plate full of food each mealtime.

Creating a home on his chin, a distinctive mole is prominent to anybody’s eye. Many mock him for it but slowly it has become his signature feature, so only occasionally he comes annoyed at any comments about it; he is yet to give it a nickname. A rounded nose sits centre in the middle of his face, a feature retained by his mother. It is only the noticeable feature that he has gained from her and seems to be the thing that reminds him of her, when he looks in the mirror. He is blessed to have the type of nose as many comment on his similarities to his late mother.

Along with his younger brothers, Lucas has his own physical disability which he has grown used too over the years. Being born with a slight hearing defect, Lucas is totally deaf in his right hear and has varied hearing in his other. Slowly he has learned to read people’s lips, which has helped him adapt to the world and grow used to his problem. He rarely lets it get him down but he can’t, he has his younger brothers to look out for and can’t let a little thing like that get in the way. Occasionally he does grow slightly frustrated when people mumble as it hard to read their lip movements. So he struggles from time to time in conversations.

Being the supportive figure to his younger brothers, Lucas has somewhat grown into a paternal figure to them, having to do all the things his father should’ve done for them. He has become very caring towards them as well was leading them into life. He likes to take in charge and tell them what to do and what not to do and occasionally scolds them for misbehaving. Lucas finds comfort in taking care of his younger brothers and doesn’t find it any type of weight on his shoulders. However he wishes that his father would take over his job and craves for his own care and comfort from his own dad.

Growing easily frustrated from time to time, Lucas has to leave a room where things aren’t going as planned as he wants. Everything has to go his way and when everything becomes a mess, he can easily crack. However he doesn’t let go of his temper and can easily control the erupting volcano brewing inside of him. He usually goes and sits in his room or outdoors in the meadow to try and cool himself down. In Lucas’ life everything has a place and when things are not in coordination, he can totally loose it and will not stop until everything is fixed.

Despite lacking hearing, Lucas can still hear any hurtful words spoken about him to his face, he hates it and especially criticism. If someone says he his doing something terribly wrong, it sends him plummeting down and into a state of depression. He just wants to be doing everything right and when people say things like that to him, it just sends him in a different direction. It usually triggers his moments of frustration and goes out into the fields to think things through. He finds it hard to not let criticism go to his heart. If it is anything about his brothers own problems, is winds up his gears and he has to fight himself to not lash out at the particular people.

Born first in a bundle of boys, life should’ve been normal for Lucas, despite his hearing defect. Having a mother and father who both had stables jobs as vets, Lucas was born into one of the most fortunate families in District Ten. Followed a year later by his first youngest brother Kelvin, it seemed to be all going to plan for the young family, until the birth of the last child Ryan. During labour, Lucas’ mother's body could not cope and gave in on the fight for birth. Her heart stopped and so did the rest of her body, soon after Ryan was pulled from the womb. Fortunately the baby was healthy but the death of his wife took a great toll on Lucas’ father. Only being two at the time, the death of his mother did not greatly affect Lucas as he didn’t know her too well.

Alongside his three brothers, Lucas grow up shadowing his father at work. Every day he used to bring his children along with him as he didn’t know what else to do with them. When Lucas was 9, he was left in charge of his younger brothers at home as his father realised he couldn’t be taking them to work every day. Lucas took his new job proudly, being the carer to his younger brothers. ”You’ve to be the man of the house while I am away.”His father always told him and Lucas stuck to his task.

Keeping his brothers entertained, it seemed fun to have the run of the house all alone during the day but there was something missing. As he grew older, he realised he needed more of a childhood. When he used to watch the children play out on the streets, he became jealous of their freedom but he couldn’t break his promise to his father.

Missing out on father-son bonding, Lucas craves for the day that his dad puts his family before his work. He just wants a normal family, with a normal set up like everyone else in the District.
