she's always led a simple, quiet life. the seastars are not rich, nor poor, simply average. they are not careers, but rather sailors and fisherman.

her sister, maera, wants more. she's training to be a career instead. lovisa doesn't understand why — she thinks the games are barbaric, though she would never voice that opinion out loud. maera says she wouldn't survive a day in the arena, and she's probably right. lovisa is tiny and frail, with an even more fragile heart. maera always makes fun of her for crying too much, and says that she's too soft, too caring of other's opinions.

sometimes she wishes she could be strong like maera. she doesn't envy careers, but maera is the strongest person lovisa has ever known. the only thing she has over her sister is her artistic ability, but other than that, she always pales in comparison.
