It took her until her sixteenth birthday to realize that she'd never be the daughter her mother always wanted. She was, is, and would always be something... less, somehow. It wasn't because she wasn't interested in boys, or in getting dressed up, or in going out, but there was something that set her apart.

Brig spent so long trying to make up for it that she accidentally became exceptional.

It was: if she couldn't be good at what was expected of her, then maybe she could be good at something else, at everything else. If she couldn't behave properly, then maybe she could fight right or fish right or filch right — not that Mrs. Strangways ever caught wind of that last one. Dead-set determined to get something right — to prove to her mother, her brother, herself, that she was good enough, Brig Strangways-Teach obsessively threw herself at whatever else was placed in front of her. Career training. Sailing. Piracy.

She loves whatever she can memorize. Footwork. Knots. Shipping routes.

And she never means to be — what was it that Roger called her last Ratmas? Antagonistic. She doesn't try to pick fights, she swears, but she can't keep her strong opinions to herself. Anyhow, maybe she shouldn't be blamed for being so combative, considering the years she's spent training for combat.
