Scout's heart is too quiet, scared still. The silence grows around her, blooming. Colors crackle and burst with over-saturation, but no matter how much she blinks - eyelashes fluttering in a way that would normally cause her every wish to be granted - she can't get the world to do what she wants. The scent of the floorboards and the dust between the cracks intensifies until she chokes, the lack of her own pulse deafens her, and the air is too hot and too cold, too vacant and too dense to move. It feels like an accomplishment to tremble.
So there she stands, quaking with debilitating fear and thinking this is progress. Over the years her brother taught her some of the basics of fighting - not to tuck her thumbs when making a fist, how to grip and throw a knife, how to block attacks - but she isn't prepared for this, not like a District Four Tribute should be. This was never supposed to be her. Not her. Not this Krigel. Not this Krigel. Not this Krigel. Someone was supposed to save her.
When the door opens and the first of her family members steps through, all the selfish girl can think is: That Krigel.
