You emerge into a tunnel, rising to the top of the stairs to find yourself still wrapped in darkness. This area is much narrower than the pit you were just in, with the walls only a few strides apart. Two people would be able to reach - arms extended and hands overlapping at the center - from one side to the other. There is more than enough room to move, but the echoes don't hold the same cavernous edge that they had before. In here, everything sounded close and twisted, like the sound bounced off of the walls and warped before reaching you. The night had been spent on the ground, resting uncomfortably on hard rock with only your bag to serve as a pillow. The anthem had been the only source of light, a glittering momentary illumination of the scattered rocks around that barely touched the floor through the darkness. You were too busy looking at the faces that had been shown to look around you, though.
The first face startled you. The boy from Six, who had seemed ready enough to keep on attacking after the bloodbath had ended, floated above you. Immediately you connect him to Mach, remembering how they had seemingly been allied. Despite the ice you tried to cling to, the heat in your core melted the frost away in your fear. Seeing Mach's face in the sky might solve your weakness, but you couldn't bring yourself to wish for that. This weakness was one you had started to grow accustomed to, almost become addicted to. Before, you had been solid stone, a mountain not a boy, now you felt your life's blood flowing like molten rock through your granite veins. Mach had awoken the dormant volcano under your skin, bringing heat to a peak that had been chilled for far too long.
In the dark the cold clings to you again, surrounding you like the shadows that block all sight. The air smells faintly of smoke, like a large fire burned in the distance and only traces of the dark clouds wafted down the tunnel toward you. Heat presses on you, threatening to destroy your icy solace with its ever-present promise of discomfort. Sounds clack around your head, ricocheting from cavern wall to cavern wall in a disarraying pattern. One set of clacks fall into a proper pattern, a clack-scrape clack-scrape that grows louder by the moment. Knowing that the sound could only mean trouble - the harpy's tell-tale wing flaps had been your only warning before, now you would have to rely on your ears once more as your only defense - you drew your sword and waited for the moment when the beast came closer.
Clack-scrape clack-scrape, the sound was close now, both echoing more and becoming more distinct. This wasn't a weapon or boots, this was a creature with claws rushing at you down the tunnel. A growl came from close behind you and you spun to bring the blade up before it could sink its fangs into your neck. With a quick swipe, you hoped you could land a blow that might knock it away. Hitting it would tell you where it was, and from there you could keep slashing until it was dead like the harpy.
