Alyria’s world began in darkness, the ebbing reality between life and not existing all together, which is ironic because that is what she fears most; the darkness. So it is no wonder she came into this world screaming at the top of her lungs, breathing in new air, torn from her place in the dark by white hands and men in masked faces. The light was blinding, scalding her fresh skin as she squirmed beneath the hospital lights as she was hastily handed to a woman who looked just like her, only 30 years her senior, but she did not care that the white lights hurt her little eyes as she tried to adjust, she must have been thankful to be out of that place which was the in between but- most unforgettably- dark.

For the next 8 years however, Alyria did not have to face the darkness that all humans fear deep within them, a primal urge that has lived within us since the dawn of our time and perhaps before that. The young girl was lucky enough to have a father who was wealthy in the mining business that supported the pillars of District 2, owning a number of small marble mines himself, while her mother was an ex-career who had taken to the socialite life after her career as a Peacekeeper in training was cut abruptly short when she broke 3 vertebrae in her spine, causing her to lose the use of her legs.

Her parents wanted the best for her and they gave it to her. Dance lessons began at age 3, piano lessons aged 4 and martial arts at age 5, alongside etiquette lessons, tutored maths and english, Alyria was being taught to be a lady, to say please and thank you and walk with an upright posture, all the while being trained to knock someone twice her size flat on their back. Alyria was contempt with learning about piroetes and chords but much prefered her training the martial arts; she excelled at them over the other things, something which was stark against her progress in the piano, etiquette and dance lessons she received. Her parents saw this as a blessing, having a child so adept in fighting that their hopes for her to become a career were within reach but it was not merely Alyria’s skill which made her a protege at fighting.

It was her master. Her master was a 60 year old, ex peacekeeper who had lost his sight when he had boiling water throwing in his face. His scars healed over time but he never regained his sight, but this did not stop him from turning into a slacker, a lazy person who wasted away over time. Her Master used his increased sensitive hearing, heightened by the loss of his sight, to learn to fight in a new way; her master was able to listen to the movements of a person and determine their next move and therefore their next attack. He was the only blind martial artist in Two and perhaps one of the best in his field, however he was harsh and cruel and unrelenting and pushed Alyria to the edge so that she could become the best; his methods of doing so were, unconventional.

Alyria would wake up at 5am everyday to go on a run with her master, her job was to lead him through the District and the run would happen come rain, shine or snow. While there were days she would attempt to refuse, her masters remarks pushed her to go on with the run; she was stubborn and prideful and certainly would not let a blind man show her up. Alyria would also be tasked to walk across hot coals again and again until the soles of her feet were black with the soot, the coals searing her feet slowly until they were tougher than nails. When she misbehaved, or even did something wrong on the training floor, Alyria was forced to stand on one leg for as long as she could without access to food or water during this time of punishment; she would do it beneath the beating sun and often faint from exhaustion however her Master never told her parents why she really had fainted.

There was one training exercise that Alyria grew to despise the most. At age 8 she was hitting a flatline in her progress in martial arts, neither getting any better or any worse during her lessons and it certainly went noticed. Her Master was almost disappointed, thinking he had no more to teach the girl when an idea struck him which would train her to use her senses to the best of her ability. After Alyria’s fighting partner struck her down yet again, her Master called her over to him, she obeyed, as she always did but she did not expect what he did next. Taking her to the changing room, she was ordered to stand in the closet, and when she stepped inside, he closed and locked the door behind her.

Plunged into the darkness, the girl remembered the fear that was rooted within her DNA. She felt the monsters creeping in the shadows around her, her fight or flight instinct causing her heart rate to increase; Alyria began to panic, screaming, banging on the door to be let out but her Master would not give into her cries for help. He simply told her he would let her out when she allowed her senses to adjust to the blindness she was experiencing or when the session ended, dependant on which came first. That day, the end of the session came first and Alyria went home with a tear stained face, and it was the same for next day and the next.

Eventually though, she learnt to embrace the darkness. It took her roughly a year to gain the nerve to control her fear when she stood waiting in the dark and then her Master began training her to fight with a blindfold and she began to improve again. Using all her senses but her sight, Alyria’s urge to fight increased and her interest in anything but fighting began to wither away, she became obsessed with it. And when she began career training, things began to only become worse. She was perhaps the best student of her class, with the help of her Masters training, but she also became to most terrifying. With her martial arts training, adding weapons to the mix made her lethal. Catlike and stubborn, Alyria fighting style was unique compared to those of her class.

That's, perhaps why, the ‘accident’ happened. Alyria was 17 years old when the accident happened, though she doesn’t call it an accident just something that happened; she’ll claim the victims fighting skills were not up to par and that's why he ended up in hospital. Alyria was paired with a 16 year old brute, 6 foot, built like a stone wall; a gargatuan compared to the petite 5 foot 4 brunette. He had been- at the time- the only person Alyria hadn’t faced because the trainers were worried he’d hurt her but when it finally came to their sparring, it was he who got knocked down. Alyria went too far, cut off the circulation to his brain for far too long with the end of a chain and the girl put him in hospital for 8 months and left him permantly brain damaged; she was kicked from the career training programe and her Master refused to teach her from then on out until she learnt who she was.

Lost without her fighting, unable to sign up for Peacekeeping at all following a brief Doctor’s visit that deemed her physically unfit for service, Alyria fell into her mothers routine, becoming a socialite, attending parties, flirting with men twice her age and drinking cocktails with rouge painted on her lips. For a time, she enjoyed it. THe parties, what one in 2 would consider the high life, she enjoyed the jewels and the dresses and the hair, she enjoyed it all; perhaps a little too much. She felt lost for a long time in this porcelain copy of herself, she was trying to forget her life as a career but, as her Master had once told her, the will to fight never goes away and he was right; Alyria craved it.

She began, at first, going to fight clubs, in the depths of the poorest parts of the District Alyria would fight men in cages until her knuckles were bloody with her own blood and her opponents. The first few times, she lost. She was rusty and out of practice but slowly, she began her old routine. Running at 5 am in the morning, training with a blindfold, Alyria would stand on one leg for as long as she could and then the next time she went fighting she won, and walked away with cash in hand. Eventually however, not even the fighting rings were enough; Alyria wanted more. She always wanted more, she had been a selfish brat since birth and she always got what she wanted.

And when the fighting ring banned her from fighting, she decided it wasn’t enough fighting. There was something she was missing, the adrenaline that she had felt when she’d had a chain around that boys neck, the adrenaline she’d felt in her veins as she watched him writhe, struggling to breath and so she went out in search for something else. And she found it in, some, alcoholic scum, he was her first kill and she did it not because she wanted to, not because she could but because she wanted to know it was possible and how it felt; she used her bare hands to strangle him to death and she felt some sort of ecstasy as she watched the life leave his eyes.

And she did it again. While lowlives and deadbeats were interesting enough to kill, she soon grew bored and wanted to go big, determined, Alyria began to hunt bigger fish. Fish that she had one swam with, ones who had feared her but no longer did because she had made a mistake, ones who got exactly what she had once wanted. She had always been a selfish one, so she began hunting them down, one by one, taking their lives because she couldn’t have them. So, just like that, Alyria became the monster in the dark. Her fear became her, she waits in the shadows, where there was only one monster now; her. And she’s waiting.
