I would like to show
Cut open my skull
Look into my head

i. THE LOOKS. Deep shadows surround even darker eyes. Beady blacks dots stare out onto a monochrome world. Bruises dance across his face - galaxies illuminate his pale skin, contouring the bulging triangle of his nose. Freckles like inverted stars appear and vanish amongst the violence. A midnight velvet curtain sweeps over his forehead; it is pinned back occasionally when the piece of art behind it has been restored to it's previous state of granduer.

Peregrine works with calloused fingertips and bruised knuckles. He is elegant like a well cut diamond, but he can cut through anything. Or, that's what he tells himself. The lanky boy arches his back over his work; sacrificing his fine posture to his work and in return gaining a swan-like curve in his neck.

Clad in a shirt stained with cleaning solution and diamond stardust he ensures that he dressed for his role; the tormented artist, ruined, compressing all signs of vision deep within himself.

ii. THE CHARACTER. Few people who look so empty have such colour inside them. In Peregrine’s eyes, any unnecessary emotion spilt could leave his work empty. A perfectly faceted jewel needed a keen eye and perfect judgement. Anything but focus was more than a distraction but a danger. Calm. Silence. These are the friends of a true artist.

His mother once told him that he had a heart of gold. She was right. He was as conceited and cold as the glowing metal promised to be. What had she been to him? Loving her would draw the love out of his work like life from a divine being. She was the coal left behind; fated for hard graft and him for artistry.

In his silence he sees everything. The charcoaled remains of the house on the hill. The mother being mugged in the alley beside her home. He saw it all. He saw the beauty in it too. Something warm drew him in; the same calling that urges people to photograph hungry children with big eyes and protestors engulfed in flames.

iii. THE PAST."Ain't you ever wondered why you do it, Ma?" Peregrine's deep hum of a voice seemed harsh from misuse, as it always did. Her eyes were red from crying. "Ain't you ever thought be why?"

His heart beat was constant and slow. His stomach didn't curled with hatred or guilt. The words tumbled out without a care; why should he care if it's the truth? After all, all art is truth.

"You do it all for me, Ma. You suffer and you slave because I need you to." He looked her dead in the eye. "I want you to." Her desperate look, in search for him comfort, crumbled under the weight of his words. He continued. Though his tone was verging on compassion his words stung with the power of a thousand knives. "I want you to slave over the furnace til your hands bleed because I am your son... And I deserve that fr-"

Trembling hand clawed across his face.

"You are no son of mine!"

I fight with my obsession.
I feel the tension,
a need for caution
