holly and her family grew up on a farm in the rural part of district five, far from the town center. they raise livestock, mostly chicken and goats. most of district five has converted to refineries rather than farmland, but the lovewrights retained their land and business throughout generations. they have a vast garden in the back of their house, which belongs to her mother, who is a florist. she has a shop at the edge of town, where holly and her sister, lavender, often help out.

none of the lovewright children spend much time on their schoolwork. instead, they prioritize the farm and the florist shop, working hard to put food on their family's table. their family has always been poor, but they make do by living off the land. sometimes, since holly is the oldest, she has to kill their chickens for food. she finds it unpleasant, but she tries to grin and bear it. at least they never kill the goats — she's much too soft on them to be able to stomach that.
