Well, Justice Fray sure knows how to get the good stuff.

Sure, it had been a much harder task nabbing a single cocktail from District One's floor than getting entire jugs of the clear stuff that dude from Twelve always had lying around, but that stuff was just nasty. Couldn't even disguise the taste if you tried, and it wasn't even fun to get drunk off, so what'd be the point?

Could be my last couple nights alive, for all I know. You really expect I'd spend it all waiting to die like I'm already in the arena? I'm not starving myself before I'm gonna have to, after all. Food, drink, joy, trust...

Question is, though, where the hell did everyone go? All I see is the kid from Eight -

Now there's an idea...

Yeah, I know she's twelve. That age I was still more-or-less innocent, didn't start hangin' around shady folk or stealin' alcohol and shit. Then again, I didn't get sentenced to fight to the death when I was twelve, so.

Least I can do is keep her from missin' out on the grown-up stuff.

Well, the interesting parts, at least. Like this bright pink drink in a fancy decorated glass, tastin' like sweet herbs and lemonade with a twist of orange peel in the middle. You'd never see somethin' like that in Eleven. Bet she's never seen it in Eight either.

Wish I'd gotten a couple more of the snacks sittin' next to it, too. Could probably get that from room service, though. If they're gonna treat us like victors, I'm gonna try and enjoy every minute it lasts for.

"Hey, Gillian!"

Oops, maybe that was a bit loud. If anyone else hears us though, I've nicked a few bottles of rum too. Wouldn't mind sharing with everyone.

"This stuff is great, wanna try some?"

A dried out rose still smelled sweet, even with its petals threatening to fall off. You twisted the thing in circles under your nose as you sat, legs crisscrossed, eyes staring at a page of notes. (Watch out for Exar, even if he looks like a prince? ~~Is Alejandro cute or a nerd or both?~~ What was the name of the girl from district seven?). Time was threatening to get away from you here, tucked away in the hallway leading up to the training center. They had wanted you to prepare for your personal training score (just take a knife and stab something, Gilly), but instead you sat on one of the comfy benches, whiling away the hours.

Hey Gillian!

You looked up from your spot at the boy from Eleven and scrunched up your face. Of all the boys, his knowing your name did not particularly excite you. He seemed weird in the same way the boy in Mrs. Talam’s class that had once stuck a whole frog in his mouth did—unpredictable, impulsive, and maybe a little bit crazy. Not to mention he might have stuck a whole frog in his mouth. You hunched closer to your book, but he kept on it, this stuff is great, wanna try some?

He held out a container of something—you sniffed the air—something that he’d nicked that was for older kids. Not that you were afraid (well, you were a little afraid). You closed your book and placed it down by your side, making sure to tilt your head to the side to get a better look. Well, he was handsome, even if he has a big nose. And I like his messy hair, it reminds me of the herbs momma grows in the window— (focus!)—Why would someone like him want to talk to someone like me? You tapped your fingers on the cushion at your sides.

“Ummm…” You stood and put both hands together. You sniffed the sweet smell of fruit and smiled. “Oh—it smells like lemons and oranges!” You said it to him, but to no one, more that you had only ever heard of lem-o-nade as a delicacy. Was this lem-o-nade? “Thanks Gabriel. You can call me Gilly by the way!” You fluttered your eyes and grinned at him before taking the bottle in your hands. You gave a long swallow—

“Oh my heck!” You sputtered after you swallowed, lips curling and eyes watering, what was that? “It tastes like my stomach’s on fire!”
