It's by watching the little girl from Three that you first notice the Career.
District One was always bad news. (Well, okay, maybe Ezen Moreno wasn't so bad -) You found yourself thinking, in a detached sort of way, how nearly a quarter of the girls who came before you had been killed by One, and how this boy could very well be your demise.
The girls there were deadlier than the boys, of course, but you see him towering over her and you can't help but think he could pick up a sword and decapitate her then and there, rules be damned, and paint the training hall with her blood.
Mother would say you were thinking too much and acting too little again; the knife you'd been trying to train with rests forgotten in your hand. You don't know how you can pick up any fighting in three days; besides, at least half of survival was about being clever and making allies with people. Not that you'd done any of that, either - you were too often only observing the other tributes, and being distracted by ideas of heroes and villains and stories.
So that's what's on your mind when the Career boy with a perpetual scowl shoves past you towards the weapon rack, giving you a glance that tells you he thinks of you, as well as everyone else in the Center, as scum.
"You're a big bad wolf." The words shoot out of your mouth before you can stop them. "And you know what wolves do? They die."
