Appearance
Spinel is a handsome fella' with thin brown hair and blue eyes. He's 6' 2'' tall and weighs 170 pounds, which is pretty average for Career boys in District One. His body is well built because of training, like most kids in the district. He's very proud of his body because he used to be a chubby kid, and he feels very accomplished when he has the chance to show it off.
He doesn't see himself as incredibly attractive and actually struggles with self-doubt at times because of his previous body. As a result, Spinel has trouble staying in relationships because he's afraid they're only with him for his family's money, and not for his looks.
Like all Careers, Spinel is muscular and good at fighting, and in the Games, he would be quite a formidable opponent. His main strengths fall in the weapons category, but he wouldn't be totally useless in an unarmed fight.

Personality
Spinel's personality doesn't really match his appearance. Deep down he's soft and people's words hurt him very easily. He's easily offended and struggles with his self-esteem, which often interferes with his personal relationships. He also doubts himself almost constantly and thinks for a long time before making decisions.
On the inside, he may not be the strongest, but Spinel is very good at ignoring his emotions and doing what needs to be done. He's very mentally strong and can push himself until his body literally fails. He hates failure and sometimes punishes himself for failing a task by pushing even harder the next time. His workaholic nature tends to push others away, which is the reason he's lonely most of the time. Spinel sees friends as obstacles and usually tries to isolate himself when around large groups of people. It takes a lot to gain his trust.
If he were ever in the Games, Spinel would likely be okay mentally until near the end, when he starts to realize all of the horrible things he's done. Then his mental walls will fall down one by one until he loses his ability to keep pushing. At that point, he will either pick himself back up or give up entirely.
History
Spinel's parents are huge fans of the Hunger Games, so they signed him up for training the moment he could walk. His parents are very shallow and their love for Spinel is fake. They tell him they're proud when in reality they just want bragging rights if their son wins the Games. Spinel knows this but tries to ignore the fact by working even harder. He thinks he has to earn their love.
He's not very receptive to acts of affection because of his unusual relationship with his parents. They used to reward him for his achievements, which caused him to think that love and pride were earned. As a child, he was only allowed to eat dinner if he proved himself in a fight, and his dad was always watching because he was friends with the instructors. Normal families confuse him, and he sees other children as brats because their parents "spoil" them in his opinion.
Spinel's parents have been emotionally abusive to him in the past, and he hides these wounds under layers of tough exterior. He has been shaped and molded into his parents' perfect child, and is in constant fear of disappointing them. They tell him stories of their difficult past, and make it seem like he will be hurting them if he doesn't win the Games and make them proud. Whenever Spinel oversteps his bounds, his parents have to simply make him feel guilty and he will be obedient again.
Around the District, Spinel is an outcast. He knows a few people, but if he's ever approached he will try to avoid the interaction at any cost. At school he focuses on his studies, but nothing else. Anybody that is concerned about him is usually too afraid to do anything about it.
