“Jayne… don’t forget to keep your eye on your elbow when you push forward… you’ll get him next time, I think.” these words that were spoken to me were the only thing that truly registered in my mind between the time my spear missed hitting Ronan and Saturn's connected with the eye of the youngest boy. The boy named Severus fell, and then, BOOM!

That sound meant that another tribute was dead. This was not the first at the end of Saturn's weapon during his time in these Games, but it was the first of this fight, and I sensed that it wouldn't be the last. I wanted to listen to the advice that Saturn had given me in how to aim my spear. There were so many other things I wanted to do, too. I wanted to cry, having seen Saturn kill this boy. I also wanted to tell Saturn that he'd done well. There were so many mixed emotions swirling around in my head, and I wasn't sure which ones I should let out to see the world (or at least, what was left of the world).

There was one other thing that I truly wanted to do, too, though, and that was keep fighting, which meant that I had to take Saturn's advice on how to hit my target better. I had to keep my eye on my elbow when I pushed forward, as I had been told. Surely, someone with as deadly accuracy as Saturn knew what they were talking about.

I was ready to strike, adrenaline pulsing through me. I let out a yell, like my ally had before he had struck down his opponent.

"HRRRRRAAAAAHHHHH!"

"Hey you ugly, goddamn fucks," Ambrosia says calmly, eyes on Severus' fallen body, "He didn't want to get killed by you."

And for some reason he's mad.

Yeah, Ambrosia had hit him first but that'd also made Severus his target, not anyone else's. The least they could do is leave the child to him.

"Neither does he," he says and gestures at the guy from yesterday, Ronan. He'd given Ambrosia a cigarette. That makes him slightly alright in Ambrosia's very small, short book. There aren't a lot of people left in the arena that he can say he has a connection to but something had happened last night in the tent after everyone else had left. Ronan had seen something that he hadn't been meant to and for once, someone had treated Ambrosia like a human being. He'd been grateful.

"He may be a fucking asshole but the way I see it, I don't like either of you." The both of them hadn't shut up for this whole fight. That Saturn boy and Ronan, just going back and forth about how tired they were and deserving, forgetting about the rest of them, forgetting about Ambrosia as always. He was tired of being forgotten.

"So stop ignoring me. I'm your biggest threat right here," Ambrosia says and hefts his axe. All of them have blood on their hands, all of them are muddy, tired, restless. This isn't anything special, they all want to go home. For the most part, Ambrosia is still trying to make a decision about that. He's probably the only person here that has absolutely nothing waiting for him. He has nothing left to lose and perhaps that makes him the most deadly.

He stops and points the end of his axe at the bulky career from one, "You. I hate the way you fucking grunt."

He grins.

Ronan is a dead man walking. Static filled ears, terrible thoughts that linger across his skin, crimson oozing from his wounds, life is war. Ruin, pestilence, monster, villain, Ronan. Everything comes back to him. Everything is at the tips of his fingertips with a puff of smoke, the air inside his lungs feels heavier and lighter at the same time. The cigarette going deeper and deeper with ash, but the feeling is giving him hope. Not hope at surviving because he's just waiting for hell. He's just waiting for his punishment, the pain he would eternally suffer or the throne that they would give him for being a monster like his mother wanted him to be.

Toxic masculinity that had wanted him to never stray from the path.

Hell was waiting, but he couldn't let her down.

He couldn't let her death be in vain.

Ronan's ears sound with static as everything fades from view. His heart is beating in his chest and something in the way Saturn is moving reminds him of Rory's death again. Ronan's slow, he's known he's slow since Rory's death. The sound of the area disappears around him. The words jumbling in his ears of not good enough. Feet pushing hard towards the front of that flaming spear, but he's not gonna make it. Severus. The dreamer. The boy who still had the innocence of a young kid when he first met him. The kid who drew blueprints in a notebook that made him see the genius that was Severus Ward. Everything was too slow, until it reaches his eye.

The sound of a cannon firing in the distance shatters him.

Ronan's let Rory down.

Severus Ward is dead.

And it was all his fault.

Anger is in his veins, but he can't help it. He can't help, but feel the anger towards Saturn. The career took another one of them. Another death to add to why Ronan should die. Another reason that Ronan was a failure. Another reason why Ronan couldn't give in. Another reason to break down and put up his walls again. The cigarette smoke comes out with a heaviness that feels like his whole neck is tearing apart. He's got a lump in his throat from the guilt. The guilt of getting to live over Severus Ward, the dreamer and Aurora Lachance, the hero.

Hell would have a special place for him.

Eyes glance to Raven as he feels his head spin and the strength he has giving away. She's gotta be destroyed by this. War and Pestilence. The two horsemen left in this apocalypse. War and disease being the last things left in this arena. Ashes covers the ground that he exists on, the fire in his chest burning hot. All that's left was them against the people who they've created. The killers that they had created through out their time in this giant performance.

The circus tent reminds him of Leticia. The way Severus is there reminds him of his pain in the arena. The blood from his wounds reminds him of the pain from before. The cigarette between his lips reminds him of the addiction that fuels him. Ex reminds him of the strength he'll never have. All Ronan can do is feel like a dead man walking. Jayne's blade misses him and he almost threatens to speak, but he's so tired of being an ass. He's tired of this performance, but he has to do it. He has to keep fighting.

Hell could wait.

Ambrosia swings hard and Ronan can feel death approaching both of them. Saturn or Ronan. What would Lady Death decide?

Who will she want?

He can't help himself.

He can't help feeling them on his heart.

He needs to fight.

He needs to fight until his very last breath.

Raven needed him.

He wasn't going to let her down.

He was tired of letting others down.

"Say hello to Damaris for me."

The cigarette's ash falls for the final time.

Ronan Keeni-Einfallen swings with them in his heart.

For Rory. For Severus. For Raven.

For himself.
