Syara Strand

District 7
The first rays of morning light dance playfully through the dense forest canopy above her. The light is warm, inviting, full of the life force that keeps the nature around her alive and thriving. Suddenly the greenery around her shines bright. And when the light lands on her pale skin and her long blonde hair it's as if she was also a ray of light, shining as she moves gracefully and delicately among the trees she loves so much.
The woods of District 7 are the perfect place for a dreamer. Syara can move in her soft, gentle steps that she knows off by heart as she navigates the maze of nature around her. One look at her square-shaped face and one would assume she was stuck in a daydream; her cupid's bow lips and button nose rest in a soft smile. Under her pronounced brow, her piercing blue eyes gaze around as if she can see beyond the surface of the world around her. It's as if she's perpetually living in a pleasant daydream, soaking in every happy moment with no sign of rising out of the dream back into reality.
The forest is her paradise. She's slightly above average in height, but the rows upon rows whose trunks seem to continue forever into the distant sky above her make her feel tiny in comparison. She loves the older trees with their massive trunks, standing impassively until the lumberjacks of District 7 come to chop them down. She loves the newly planted saplings, tiny and fragile as they search for the skies to reach. The forest was its own world, and Syara was a tiny traveller doing her best not to disturb it.
Most of all, the forest is a treasure trove for her experiments with plants. Syara stops her delicate steps through the trees and bends down, looking curiously at a plant sporting a series of tiny white bell-like flowers. She grins. Lily of the Valley, the flower she's been looking for. She bends down and carefully picks a couple of the tiny plants before opening her bag and placing them inside with an assortment of other plants she's already collected. The tiny, innocent-looking plant is just what she needs for her experiments with poisons and antidotes. Having collected everything she needs, she starts her journey home.
Syara loves to invent different herbal remedies and poisons. She picked up the interest as a child, working in her family's apothecary and watching her parents create medicines for the residents of District 7 that couldn't afford the cost of more potent Capitol medicines. As she grew, so did her visionary talent, and soon she was working on understanding the properties of each plant she could find in the woods and how they may be used to heal. When she can't be in the woods, Syara is happiest when she has just created a new type of medicine, or a delicious new tea.
She loves to see the joy her inventions bring to the people who benefit from them. The smile on the face of someone trying her new teas, the relief in the eyes of someone anticipating the easing of their pain. She can't help but love the people who love her creations. It's these moments where she feels truly liked by the people in her District.
She doesn't have very many friends in District 7. When people first meet her, they see her sweetness and her beauty. But soon people see her eccentricities; her dreamlike temperament, the intensity of the emotions she feels. And people learn to keep their distance from her. They all talk about the weird girl from the apothecary with daggers behind every word. And yet she cares for each person deeply. Her heart aches when they hurt, soars when they're happy. When they're sad she cries along with them, when they die she grieves for their memory.
They continue to judge her, but she doesn't mind. She can always find solace in the forest.
Syara continues through the forest. As she gets farther and farther from the heart of the forest the amount of greenery lessens, the trees don't reach as high into the sky. It's not long before the woods give way to the buildings of District 7. She stops at the edge of the Town Square, and turns into her family's apothecary shop. Inside, her mother is busy dealing with the couple customers inside. Syara is similar to her mother in a lot of ways. The same fair skin, the same bright blonde hair. Her mother is a quieter woman, but nonetheless kind to everyone who walks through the doors of her shop. Syara's mother is also where she learned a lot of what she knows about plants. Her mother knows every plant in the forest by heart; what is edible, what is poisonous, what can be used for medicines. Syara's mother is her best friend. Syara and her mother exchange a quick smile before she moves into the back room of the shop.
She takes a moment to stop and look around at the building. The apothecary has been in her family for years. They've been providing herbal remedies to District 7 since at least the Dark Days, although Syara thinks the apothecary was still running even before then. Like most of the buildings in the District, the shop was made of wood. She loved to fill every corner she could with plants she finds in the forest, creating a world of flora for herself and her mom.
Syara moves to a table in the corner of the room and opens her bag. She takes inventory of the plants she's collected, and sorts them carefully on the table to experiment with later. Then, with a sigh, she retires upstairs to the living quarters. One perk of owning the apothecary is that she and her mom get to live in the space above the store in somewhat better conditions than many other District 7 inhabitants. The apothecary is her home, and it's thanks to her father that she still gets to call it that.
Now upstairs, Syara walks to her bedroom and looks at the man in the faded photo on her nightstand. She has very few memories of her father. One summer, when she was 5 years old, a forest fire threatened to make its way to the assortment of wooden buildings in the Town Square. The District was in a panic, and Syara's father was one of the many who attempted to help extinguish the fire before it burned the District to the ground. The efforts were successful, but many perished in the battle. Syara's father, a figure of strength and courage, was one of them. Sometimes, when she's in the woods, Syara feels as though her father is with her in the nature that surrounds her. He lives on in the plants, the trees, the apothecary, and in her.
Syara lets out a breathy sigh as she turns her attention away from her father's photo. She has to fight away the tears that threaten to pour from her eyes; tears of sadness at her father's death, tears of joy at the love she feels surrounding her in this building. Syara lies down on her bed, and with her head filled with thoughts of her father, takes a moment to rest.
And as Syara sleeps the lilies of the valley lie downstairs, waiting for her to wake and turn them into something magnificent.
