my mother told me never to cry.

she told me to never forget kindness. she told me that it was my best weapon, my strongest hammer in a collection of knives. she told me that i need to be strong. she told me that i need to believe in tomorrow, believe that great things are to come and that i need to be ready for them.

i can remember her smile, as razor sharp as it was warm and inviting, an open-book killer. i remember her big, wide eyes, her raven hair, as dark as an omen or ill portent.

every day i try and remember something else about her, something that i might have forgotten by accident. i try so hard to remember everything, to keep it all locked away in the back of my head in case i get reaped one day. i'll need all of it then, need to remember everything she taught me about being a warrior. every day, i try.

she told me something about shoes; something about whistling, and something about the garden out front.

something about roses.

something about thorns.

i can't remember what it was exactly. i was only nine when she died. i hope the things that i've forgotten don't come back to haunt me in the end.
