Her legs reluctantly drag themselves through the town, pushing aside the snow like she did when she shoveled the driveway in the Pound. The gentle crush and screech, even of a dusting as defenseless as the one on the ground, sounds as if she's either making a path through the cold ground or digging her own grave. For now, she decides that the former would be the best to imagine it as.
Every house without boarded up windows is empty. If anyone lived here before the dream catchers turned it into an arena, they sure weren't in love with their quaint little village. Whatever caused them to leave, they made a full sweep. Maybe it's the apocalyptic children who took over the town, killing anyone in their way. She'd dreamt about this before: leaving the litter from the Pound in charge of District Ten. If that were to ever be the case, Maggie would get the hell out of dodge, too.
As the sun begins to set, she throws away her plan of hunting for supplies and wanders instead. This could be her last couple moments on this earth, after all. Nothing of use rest in any of them unless you count a few basic furniture pieces. And even then, she'd prefer her chances with a blade compared to launching a chair across the room.
The stars come out to play and Maggie still makes her way through the maze of streets. They tell her stories just like they did in the Capitol: ones that help her overcome all the pain and fear that comes with an inevitable fight to the death. One, however, breaks through the clouds, directly north. That's the way she chooses to travel, filled with intrigue and intuition.
When darkness is the only thing left around her, Maggie enters a home for the night. The lights inside are shaking, like the lights from the television sets in Ten's District Square. The first thing that comes to her mind is that a camera system of sorts lie behind the walls. Spying, stalking, on the rest of the Games as prey. That's certainly something she could get behind.
She runs toward the door before slowly turning the knob and peering in. No telling if it could be a trap or a plan set by other tributes to ambush whoever enters.
Instead of finding scores of tributes yielding spears and axes, she finds a jackpot. A video in front of her shows a little girl skipping in a flowy lilac dress, with her mother holding one hand and her father holding the other. They flip her and hold onto her tight.
And suddenly, her pain goes away. It's like her leg has regained all of its strength. When she reaches the screen, she falls to her knees, tears starting to flow from her eyes.
"Mom, Dad!"
She'd never said those words since their disappearance years ago. She grabs at the screen with her fingertips as if she's hugging a ghost that isn't truly there.
And so she lays there, letting her family play games with her again for the rest of the night.
