And I scoff at this, feeling the strain of my efforts pulse through my arms — through my veins and my blood and all my scars. Through all the pieces that have been left of me. I do little damage with my axes, but my voice is honed and sharp.

"There's just one problem with that, baby. I can't die." There are many layers to my words, soft metaphors beneath hard facts, but the sound of them never changes. The movement of my lips stays the same. 'I can't die.' And saying that doesn't stop the bleeding, but it distracts me. This is a shield I've made of my own steel.

"I'm the one going home.
That's all there is to it."

Her sword bites at me, small teeth and a smaller heart — and I have no right to judge her for her bitterness, for her anger, but I still snarl. I still want her to know that I hate her. And she was a stranger to me, but I know her now. I see the wolf in the woods.

I see myself.

And then I watch him die. Quick, quicker than I realize, and I'm turning on my heels and lost. I know these trees, and these strands of yarn, and this bloody grass — but suddenly I feel sick, alone. I don't know where I am, and yet I've been here before. I watched her die, too. I pretended like it didn't kill me; and now I'm blinking, moving dark hair out of my face with a blade. I am made to hurt.

Ridley breaks the silence, breathing life back into the thick tension that surrounds us — the smoke on the air and the iron against our skin. There is no time to think of corpses, only the dying. She is a guardian, arms outstretched before a boy I want to destroy. Someone I want revenge on. Someone that wants to live, too, but I can't let myself think about that.

I focus on what she has to say, laughing when she finishes.

"And where are the people who tried to kill me? Where are my hands now?" A different sort of fire catches around me, burning in my eyes. "I never needed someone to protect me, so why does he? I killed the people who hurt me myself." I lift my blades, the raw stumps that still haven't had the chance to heal. "It hurts, doesn't it? I know."

Am I talking about losing an ally, or losing a limb?

I understand both.

There would be plenty more opportunities to attack, and besides, there were a couple people in this fight who were looking worse than Penelope. This was going to be over soon.

And then—

“Ridley?” Delaney actually reached her this time, didn’t get distracted by any more bullshit words. The fight could wait, the other alliance could wait, all of this could fucking wait. “Ridley? Listen to me, okay?” She put her hands on her ally’s shoulders. “You’re a star. You’re a fucking superstar. You’re a big fucking star in the sky and you’re shining so bright that you’re gonna blind all the stupid people on Earth. You got this. We’ve both got this. We’ve got this and we’re gonna get the fuck out of here.”

Her chest heaved with every word she spoke, but she meant every single second of it. She felt more genuine than she’d felt her entire life. She had spent too long lying, under pressure from her parents and society, but she was done. She was Delaney Youngblood. She was sharp, and vicious, and she loved women, and she didn’t want to be a fucking career anymore. She wanted to be herself.

She also wanted to stay alive.

The flames were merciless.

His axe drew red across Reggie’s skin and I became aware that he was beginning to fade away — metamorphosing from beast to boy once more. Perhaps, he had always been a boy. I’d told lies that he had claws when all Reggie Blume had, was a strong heart and a strong will. I‘d seen a boy so eager to burn the world down to ash and handed him the matchstick.

It should had made a twinge of guilt jab at my ribs when Reggie fell. It should had made me rush to his side, if I weren’t so adamant on tearing him apart myself.

He was simply another sacrifice that would grant me the path out of here. No matter how hardly I tried, no remorse would bloom in me. As he laid near my worn boots, I craned my head down at him and let the little ounce of pity I had in me gleam in my eyes.

“You’ve done well,” I told him. “This is for the better anyways,” my eyes flitted across his hollowed-out face, “I can sleep more soundly at night with you gone.”

Let Death keep Reggie Blume. Let him tell Death of its silver-haired bride. Let him tell Death that I would be late to the wedding altar. The faeries and the old gods could wait for me.

I had a life to live here, a heartbeat to keep alive.

When Delaney’s words rang aloud, my response came swift. “Then, leave,” I snarled at them both, showing teeth. “Turn around and run. I will give you two that mercy, for now.” I jutted my chin curtly at Milo, letting an unkind smile plaster across my mouth. “But, he’ll die.”

There were no cloying lies that I’d told Reggie now, no sweetness for Milo to swallow. There was only the bitter truth for him to choke on. “You know what this means,” I said.

It was not a question.

Her words, as though through water, surfacing. Little bubbles of hope. "Yeah!" Milo rejoined weakly. There was something important in the way they spoke to one another over the body of the dead boy. A telling of their story, the narrative knit together by the tributes, not the Gamemakers. He desperately wanted to be a part of it, to be a vital element of the climax.

He feared he would only be a part of the quiet denoument.

“But, he’ll die.”

The silver-haired boy confirmed it.

Milo deflated for a half hiccuped, half swallowed, half choked-upon breath.

And then he did the only thing he could on half a leg, one arm and a few missing fingers. He shoved himself violently away from Ridley, spinning, toppling, releasing his flaming weapon at the boy building him a coffin of words.

"Not dead yet!"

Ridley braced herself for another hit from Twelve, but it never came. It wouldn't ever come, she realized as she noticed just how much blood she and Milo had drawn from him. He was done. She'd finished him.

"You're made of strong stuff, kid," she murmured, blood still pumping out of her wrist. "It's been an honor."

But as Penelope's attack took off a piece of what was left of Milo's good leg, she realized that it wouldn't be enough to save him.

"You got this. We’ve both got this. We’ve got this and we’re gonna get the fuck out of here." Delaney's voice cut through everything and caught Ridley just before she spiraled into something dangerously close to despair. Someday, Ridley decided, she wanted to be as strong and brave as Delaney Youngblood. She was proud to be her ally and secretly, silently, proud to call her a friend.

"Okay," she breathed, feeling as if she was just barely keeping everything from shattering around her. They were losing Milo. She couldn't move her hand. She'd just killed a boy. "Okay."

The weight of Milo throwing himself away from her was a shock that she wasn't quite prepared for. She stumbled away, nearly tripping over the threads again, and watched his flaming axe cut through the air and embed itself in the arm of the boy from Seven. Vargen. Some part of her knew it was his last attack, the final burst of flame before he fizzled out, and that hurt worse than any hit that had landed on her that day.

"Milo." Her voice sounded so small, stinging with a sense of betrayal and desperation that she didn't quite understand. Her mess of a boy, her fighter, was going to die.

And just like with Torren, there was nothing she could do.

She turned toward Penelope Marcet and found no insults that she could throw, no more bluffs she could draw upon for an illusion of strength. Only the raw, bitter truth that felt like a debt owed to a girl without hands.

"Yes." Her voice was weighed down by a heaviness in her chest that seemed to be trying to collapse her from the inside out. "You're right. It hurts like hell."

The pain returns to me.

And I know it well; this burning across my skin, the clap of thunder in my bones. It rushes down my cheeks in tears. I have cried here more than I ever did in life — in the past, when I was beautiful, and I was whole. When nothing could hurt me.

This is some kind of death. In my hands, by my hands — without them. I have stopped trying to wash the blood out of my hair. I no longer call for the bird to perch on my shoulder, to nest in that red waste. I stare up at her above us, quiet in the trees where she stays, and I beg her to leave. My selfishness is all that stops the words.

If I could, I would. I would leave every last tribute here, even Vargen — I'd place that crown on my head until my scalp bled. And I would watch them all die from a throne. But that would be too kind; I have to be the one to hold the executioner's axe. That's all I can fucking hold anymore.

I am not a girl that people root for, not here — but I am a survivor. I have proven that much. My body is not a body anymore; it feels distant from me, something I try to lose focus on. Because when I think about my legs, and my arms, all I feel are the cuts and the filth and the fragments of who I used to be.

I was a star, once.

And now I'm just a flame, and there's nothing beautiful about what I do. I'm a killer. That's not something I'm proud of, even if my lips curl into a smile and I hold up my blades like I'm thrilled. No, it's not that. Killing this boy will give me nothing — nothing but another day, another chance, and that's the only reason I am exhilarated.

I signed the Devil's book days ago —

I know what I have sacrificed.

"Whoever told you that you can't die was giving you some bad information." But I told it to myself, I spoke it into existence. And I do not lie; "It never goes away. The pain." I'm looking at Ridley now, at a girl on the verge of losing so much.

And as much as I miss them, hands do not compare.

Penelope sliced open what was left of Milo's leg and Ridley knew that it was enough to finish him. A part of her wondered at the fact that the girl from Five hadn't touched her, yet it felt as if her blade had lodged itself directly in her chest, the pain expanding in the hollowness there and threatening to suffocate her.

She wanted to keep fighting, but she couldn't. Not in Milo's dying moments.

So instead she followed Delaney's lead and lashed out with her words as an alternative, her tone rising until she was nearly screaming. "Get away from here. Take your friend and leave."

And then she backed away and sank down beside what was left of her ally. Ridley Le Roux was no stranger to death. She refused to pretend that it wasn't terrifying. But she also refused to let Milo meet it alone.
