Your house smells of dust and alcohol.

That's what your parents like to spend money on. They're not violent or cruel, but they enjoy wasting their money to mask how miserable they are in their jobs. You don't really know how to feel about it - only that you don't like the idea of getting drunk. Then again, you've always been a rather innocent kid. A quiet bookworm with a pacifist's outlook on the world. You avoid conflict and choose not to speak your mind unless absolutely necessary.

Does that make you a coward? Probably. You don't really care either way. Cowards usually survive the longest if they're not bad people.

You clean up after your folks to make their lives easier. You've always been a helpful lad, which is probably why you became a teacher's assistant. A glorified tutor who gets paid a small wage to help children learn. You adore it, and it allows you access to the school's library. You can bury your head in a book for hours. Even when the lights go out at your house (to conserve what little candlelight and electricity is given to twelve residents), you sit by the window and use moonlight to illuminate the pages. Now, reading doesn't necessarily mean you're smart - in fact, you're fairly simple-minded a lot of the time. You're not the best at problem-solving, but at least you know your way with words the rare times you speak.

Life is easier when it's simple. You plan to keep it that way.
