I remember the first time that Ma hit me.

Sometimes I think that it makes me weak that it hurts, makes me pathetic that I can't bring myself to get back up sometimes after she does it. When dad left for the last time, he told me that I was the man of the house now. I didn't really understand what that meant when I was six, but as I'm getting older I'm starting to think that I'm not doing a very good job of living up to the task. I should have been able to handle it when she cracked her knuckles against my cheek, shouldn't have cried when it split the skin open and she got mad at me about the droplets staining the wood floor that Dad installed years ago.

It made me stronger though, so I can't fault her.

But I think that I needed to feel weak in order to be strong later, like somehow in order to be the strongest I could, I needed to understand what it was like to be on the ground, bleeding, with a bigger opponent standing over me, sneering.

"Pathetic," I can hear her still. "You'll turn out just like your father."

I didn't understand what she meant by that when she started, but I came to. Later. Maybe too much later, but still, it came to me, and in the end the truth was all the same.

It wasn't a truth that I wanted, but I don't really think that's how the truth works. The truth will out, no matter if you want it to or not.

And mother certainly did.

I started fighting when I was... honestly, I'm not sure. It was too early for the likes of most people in Panem, I'm sure, but this is Twelve, and here, just about anything goes.

Anything but fighting back against the Keepers.

But that probably goes without saying.

It didn't matter to the people running the fights that I was young, didn't matter that I was doing it to put a meal on my table and not because I loved fighting—I would throw my fists and sometimes they would land, or sometimes my opponents would land on me, and no matter what, the crowd was always entertained, and that was what mattered to them. Down there, it didn't matter that I was a poor kid from the Seam and it didn't matter that my opponent was a skinny blonde boy from the mayor's side of town. Hell, a fucking Laws themself could stumble down here and it wouldn't matter to the people running that shit as long as they were willing to throw a few punches and take a couple to the gut.

"It's about the show," one of them said to me one day, putting their hand over my wrapped fist as I struck out at the bag hanging from the ceiling. "It's not about winning or losing, it's about taking your time and making it as entertaining as you can, got it?" And then he clapped his hand on my back, a gesture that should have shown familiarity, should have been kind, paternal.

Instead, it left a bruise.

The Victor's village has terrible security.

I hope that the Victor's don't know that.

It's crazy, really, that the Keepers don't go through more effort to make sure that just anybody can't walk into the damned place. Especially now that Twelve has so many ripred-damned victors. The people here in Twelve are fucking starving, all the time. A whole district's worth of people just—angry and jaded and left to rot. And up there, on their glass mountain, the victor's live in their pretty houses with their pretty lives, barely paying attention to the people that they left behind in the heart of the district. Once upon a time, people thought that having victor's would make the district better, would make everyone's lives easier, but if anything it's just made it harder.

That's why, after Mom gets killed, I stop hanging around the house that Dad built and then abandoned and I start living off whatever I can steal from the victor's.

Does that make me a bad person? I like to think that it makes me kind of like that guy Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, except in this case the poor is just me. That feels like enough.

So far, I've only been caught once.

"You're not supposed to be here," Thorne said to me, eyebrows raised. He was sitting on his front stoop; I'd thought that he wasn't home, so I snuck in through a window, and I was crawling back out the way I came when his voice rang in the nighttime. It was usually a fifty-fifty chance he was home at night these days, but I'd been so sure the fifty would work in my favor that night.

I'd lost my footing, fallen right to the ground on my back.

He didn't make a single move to help, but it didn't move to stop me either, didn't seem that surprised or angry. Just blank, and maybe a little bit sad. Nothing like the charming, callous boy I'd seen on television for the later few years.

"Well?" he said, brows still raised.

I scrambled to stand up, brushed off the back of my pants. Not that it mattered—I hadn't bathed in three days since I hadn't made it out past the fence to the lake. Plus, it was cold as fuck these days, and I'd rather be a little dusty than frozen.

"I was just—" I start, swallowing, thinking about running.

"Grab anything good this time?" I looked at him, confused. "Last time you just took food. If you're going to steal, at least take something you can sell to Slick Sally."

"I—" I start again, at a loss for words. I furrow my brows, and then I can't help but chuckle. The look on his face tells me something. I'm not sure what exactly, but when I speak again, it's familiar. "The only reason Sally would want one of your little toys would be to burn it."

And then he grinned.

"Still, she'd pay a pretty penny for it."

I grin back.

"Fair enough."
