the basement still smells like him.

the floor still reeks of blood and piss under all the antiseptic. the walls are still stained with the shaking screams of a dying man.

once the keepers dropped him off, i spent a whole week prying information out through his fingernails, piece by piece, one by one, crooning promises and poisons into his ear until he broke.

we heard that there were riots in nine last month, and the authorities in twelve caught wind of a conspiracy around the same time, a sort of uprising that flowed its way through the districts like molasses. but the keepers eventually found the rat, because they always do, one of the grizzled men from the seam who had never learnt how to be grateful for what he had.

naturally, they brought him to us.

because it started with great-great uncle joah. it started with the rebels that killed his parents and his brother, when he ended up joining the keepers, rising up through the ranks and ordering the torturing of traitors himself.

he made us into legacies. the shadows that wait behind the white uniforms.

sometimes the people around here forget that. but when they're ten feet under, when they're flogged in the square, when their blood sticks to the softness of my skin,

that's when they remember.
