The fog rises slowly. Ezra watches on his back as it starts, low to the ground, and then swirls into the air, steam from a mug of tea, smoke off a burning piece of meat. His lungs fill with the new, thick air. A younger version of him would’ve choked, but he’s used to the feeling now, tightness in his chest, an invisible hand around his throat. It’s just how he lives now.
When he pushes himself to his feet, he notices the lack of ground between his splayed fingers. There’s nothing, no dirt or sand, just sky, a thin swirling grey. Has he died? No, he thinks. Death wouldn’t be this kind to him, not after everything he’s done. Whatever this is, it’s artificial, another Gamemaker trick to twist their minds, not unlike injecting them with adrenaline and stuffing them underground. Uncertainly leads to anxiety, and anxiety leads to doing things you may regret. He has a list.
Ezra moves quickly. He swears he can hear somebody nearby, footsteps crunching, or breathing, maybe. The blood pounding in his ears is making it hard to differentiate. He holds his knife out anyway, the weapon trembling in his hand. Whatever meets the end of it, a mutt, another tribute, he couldn’t care less. He just wants to get off the brink of whatever cliff he’s teetering off the edge of. If he falls, there’s no coming back from it.
Maybe he’s already fallen.
