spearIvy gets what she's supposed to do here, truly. Her life has been quiet at the zoo, where the people paraded in front of her stay on the safer side of glass and food gets delivered in pre-cut chunks, but her working years aren't so far away that she's forgotten them. She simply isn't sure, even as most of the rest of the herd streams out through the gates at full force—Pinkie Pie and Julian first, Mercy working to keep up and Fantasia bursting eagerly after them—that she feels like it.
Rune brushes at her and whinnies, and Ivy heaves a sigh, knocking her head against his and prancing a little at the edge of the sand but reluctant to bother following the rest of the herd. It was always the same, after all. Someone would pull her from pasture, point her at a human, and call out her cue, and then, inevitably, the moment she started getting into the game they'd call the second cue. If she tried to keep at it they'd lasso her, and she never got a proper meal out of the whole ordeal, only whatever scraps she could strip off in time. Who's to say the humans in charge would let her make it worth the effort this time?
Not to mention that the humans on the sands, though small and wounded, tempting prey in any other circumstance, are armed. One of them slices across Julian's head, dangerously close to his horn. Ivy has no interest in tangling with that nonsense, no thank you. The food back home might be less fun, but it won't stab her.
Rune makes the decision for both of them, though, charging out with his horn pointed out. None of the herd needs the others to protect them, but they are a herd, and she and Rune have been together too long for her to let him go into danger without her. Ivy sighs again, shakes her head out once to limber up, and follows.
