THE LAST TIME I SAW THIS MANY BODIES Dad's mortuary was crowded with corpses.

Of course, these bodies are standing, dancing, mingling, and breathing - their lungs exhilarated with a circus of colliding atoms, every inhalation a breath of sweet intoxicating air, and every exhalation loosening the grip on the adrenaline that's coursing through every sweat slicked body on the rumbling dance floor.

And, of course, the corpses weren't wearing masks, either.

I have a funeral to attend tomorrow (My job is to place the body in the coffin, and help Dad lower poor Mrs. Jada into her new ~~and quite eternal~~ resting place. I hear soil and darkness makes for the two perfect factors for an accommodating environment, at least, the dead never told me otherwise.), with it's black dresses and crystal tears and eulogies full of one departing cliché to the next. No one dances at funerals, no one sings, no one laughs, no one even speaks. We're allowed to sit solemnly and somberly, almost as if we were the corpses, and not poor old Mrs. Jada. (It's official. I want my funeral to be a masquerade. Maybe that would get people to begin celebrating life, and not mourning it.)

Dad tries to fit me into that cookie cutter image, as if my body was dead on the street and he kept me still as he traced a chalk outline around each of my lifeless limbs. He wants me to stay still and stop singing, because what's there to sing about when your own mother is buried six feet underground? My skin should be as pale and my lips as silent as hers, but, my veins still hold blood like they're rivers, and my lungs are eager to taste an atmosphere I haven't reached, and I'm not dead, yet - and he sure as hell can't try to make me feel like it, either, especially not just because Mom already is.

I'm sure she must've sung once, too. Even if she sang only when no one was listening - even if it was only just once in a blue moon. I'm sure of it.

I'm gonna sing, tonight, even if that means jumping onto the stage, dismissing the DJ with a nonchalant "It's okay, I made a deal with Ursula Libertine," plugging in my ruby red guitar into one of the amps (of course I wouldn't leave it at home), letting my gas mask fall around my neck so my lips could touch the cold metallic mesh of the mic, and hijacking the entire music system of the party. Which, of course, I did.

I tap one of my fingers against the metal rod, making the speakers blare with an obnoxious thump, thump, thump, until placing my rouged lips against it, once more, and gently whispering, "Good evening ladies and gents, and may I just say, you all look terrifically terrifying tonight." (A pause, a smile, a few laughs from the masks in the audience who stopped whirling in their chiffon gowns and tuxes to look at me. My voice sounds static and raspy through the speakers, as if I was thirsty for something only a performance can satisfy.) "This one goes out to my girls, Tags and Caly." I raise my hand above my eyes to block out the flood of light blinding my vision on stage, and squint my eyes to survey the sea of masks in the crowd, scanning for Tags' wild hair or Caly's wide eyes. "Babes, I know you're out there somewhere, quit keeping me waiting, will ya?"

And then, I begin to sing.

THE NIGHT is cool against my skin as it floats through the open windows but my wrist still scorches from where the male Libertine grasped a hold of me minutes ago. I have never felt so caught off-guard, never so violated at the touch of another. Only his face was recognisable underneath his mask, one I'd seen briefly across the screen of my television set a year ago - but his eyes did not gloss like they did at the death of his sister but practically scream of evil, lingering undertones and his words sly and prickling in my ears.

I must forget it. Brush it off. Not remember that I was scared, disregard it as nothing but a small mistake that shall never happen again and will never bubble to the surface of my mind, god forbid conversation. Pray he will not be there, sauntering after me in the crowd, refuse to turn my head around and check. I am more than a slip-up, still afloat in the ocean (but barely, you'd better run fast little girl) of masquerades. I will not anchor myself to a problem in the form of a snarky stranger, for you see I refuse to sink.

And my guiding beacon from the lighthouse in the storm comes in the form of a tap in the speakers and an ever-so familiar whisper. "Good evening ladies and gents, and may I just say, you all look terrifically terrifying tonight." Laughter murmurs around me and I beam, a whirring blur of dark curls and bright eyes to face the stage. Thea. She looks fabulous and utterly in her element, that guitar I've watched her play a thousand times before strung over her shoulders like another one of her limbs. I clap in delight - she might not be able to see me but I'm too enchanted by what I know is to come to make myself heard just yet. This is her moment, her time to shine - her spotlight I'd never, ever steal. Lurk in the shadows, like I always do. Let Thea play her music and Tags take centre stage, clearing up the mess of the aftermath.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

"This one goes out to my girls, Tags and Caly." At those words I jump, making it known to those around me that that's me, I'm Caly, I'm Caly and she's Thea and Tags is here somewhere and we're going to have fun tonight. "Babes, I know you're out there somewhere, quit keeping me waiting, will ya?"

I surge forwards, a wave in the crowd, darting towards her as she sings. Since we were little she's always been marvelous (and how could she not be? We are the marvelous trio - a singer, a fighter, a balance-keeper - forever causing mischief and never getting caught) and I'd beg her to sing my favourite songs over and over again until her fingers were raw from playing the guitar and our bedsprings on the edge of falling apart from all the jumping Tags and I did on our mattresses. She sings, and we dance (or at least attempt to jump around to the beat without falling over), and it's always been that way, putting on a show for only us three since the beginning of our forever.

And tonight, as I leap up on the stage next to her and clap my hands along, waiting for Tags to join me, we'll put on a show for everyone to see.

I heard a story once of a boy from a thousand years ago, who, when asked to open his mouth, held the entire universe on the tip of his tongue.

Maybe I'm a descendant from him, because tonight I feel the weightless gravity of the solar system echo beneath every pore of my flesh - fire launching beneath the soles of my feet and its energy rippling into every quick finger of mine that dances along the neck of this slick guitar. My hair untangles from its loosened bun, and each individual strand whips around my face like a snake, in its own right. On stage, I transform from the mortuary's clerk into an animal with a voice sharper than my claws - my voice sheds away from my physical body through my lips, in the same way snakes shed from their skin, leaving behind only a clinging metamorphosis of what I used to be. I'm too enticed by my own guitar and the mic in front of me to notice how the crowd might be reacting to such reckless music, contrasting from its previous slow dance, to now.

Or, at least, I notice nothing until Caly joins me on stage with a smile and dance that fuels my performance even brighter.

I swear, we are the glass-shattering kind of spectacular as Caly's claps pulse through every vibration of my song, and I'm too busy making love to my mic to bother noticing whether or not the crowd is dancing along too. Good performances are choreographed, synchronized, blue printed - but everyone knows all Great Things come from Spontaneity and the Unplanned, and, luckily for me, those performance factors are my best friends ~~(even if we are missing one, right now).~~

My voice drains into nothingness and I relish in the silence until I hear applause. Some stop dancing, waiting for the music to begin again. Instead, I grab Caly's hand in mine, hold it over my head, and pull her down to bow with me. Then, straightening up, I place my lips against the cool metal of the mic, again, to utter, "On behalf of the Love Club, have a good night, ladies and gents."

I drag Caly with me off stage, a smile beaming on my breathless lips and my guitar still sloppily over my shoulder. "God, that was great," I say, laughter grasping every syllable, "I wish I could've seen that Ursula Libertine's face."

I place the gas mask back over my face, and let my eyes roam the crowd again. "Although, there's one face we still haven't seen tonight." I turn to Caly again, my motions abrupt with suppressed energy and adrenaline. "Should we find her, or cause some more mayhem? If we do the latter, though, I'm sure she'll find us eventually, anyway."

When my name echoes up and over the crowd, it's from another direction and a different throat than the one I'd been crossing my fingers for, but it brings the grin back to my face just as easily. "This one goes out to my girls, Tags and Caly." I scream. Wild and joyous, I release all of this evening's excitement into the most ecstatic cat call of my life, jumping up and down, my arms flailing enough from the far end of the dance floor that the sea of surrounding people begins to part for me. It's the type of instinctive back-stepping that only occurs when someone gets the sense that there's a total weirdo all too close by, but it's not like I can tell them they're wrong when my smile is the kind that bears both rows of teeth to the world and my hair is a whiplash hurricane of living, breathing enthusiasm. "Babes, I know you're out there somewhere, quit keeping me waiting, will ya?"

Here, babe, I'm right here and now everyone knows it.

Boys are one thing, but my girls are quite another and the adrenaline that smashes into me harder than a brick wall as Thea starts to sing is nothing like the nervous flutters of my earlier oh god whatdoIdo uncertainty. This is the sound of courage in the air and I don't just follow it, I swallow it up with every step. The only problem is that as her song builds and overtakes the night, the dancing kicks back into high gear and suddenly I find myself caught in the roaring insanity of a war against stillness. From every side, bodies are whirling, shaking, and shimmying as if united in a rediscovery of music. I can't deny it either, high-fiving a random stranger with her hands held up in the air as I leap past and land with a sway that unwinds in rhythm to the beat. Thea has possessed this crowd. Every soul here belongs to her in a way that I don't even think the Ferry Man could challenge and I'm so proud of her that I can't contain myself. "That's my girl!" I find myself shouting over the soundwaves at someone beside me, pointing and laughing and clapping as I throw my head back and skip around some more.

Every hand seems to reach out to me in camaraderie and I grab for them as I weave my way through couples and circles of close friends, twirling giddily with a hundred strangers in celebration of something unidentifiably wonderful. If this were the rest of my life, maybe I'd never bother to daydream of danger again. Except, the song fades back into silence as I finally maneuver myself close enough to the stage to catch a glimpse of Thea and Caly with their hands in the air, taking a dramatic bow. After hi-jacking the sound system, it's a given that this couldn't go on forever, but at least I'm not the only one in the audience who feels the disappointment of a show ending too soon. "On behalf of the Love Club, have a good night, ladies and gents."

My best friends exit the stage and I'm practically climbing over people like a feral cat trying to get to them. "I'm sorry —" A deeply offended girl glares at me as I grab onto her shoulder to use as a launching point as I literally jump over another guy bent down to tie his shoe. "— but it's super important that I be over there right now!" My explanation is probably lost to her, as I'm already off like a shot once more, racing through an obstacle course of bodies crammed too closely for convenience. Cutting in between a couple in the middle of dancing together, my arms unceremoniously splitting them apart as I push through, I finally reach my destination.

"Oh my god, Thea. You audio goddess of the freaking universe! You're my hero! How amazing was that?!" I give another whoop and launch myself at Caly in a half-tackle of gracelessness. One arm wrapped around her shoulders and my other hand lifting up her mask to poke at where a dimple might hide in her cheek, I pull myself up onto my tip-toes to plant an exaggerated kiss against her temple. "And you! Stop being so gorgeous — I hate your face, it makes me feel terrible about myself. Even when you hide it, you still have all of us mere mortals beat." My voice is riddled with light-hearted sarcasm and I look her flawlessness up and down before snorting at my own ragtag ghost girl get-up. Pulling my best attempt at a zombie of the undead expression, I inevitably burst into giggles and make a sudden grab at Thea, wrangling the three of us together into a head-knocking huddle. "Okay, so can we please teach this crowd a little something about shenanigans now?"
