For twins, we look nothing alike.

Identical twins have matching everything - even DNA. I thought for the longest time that fraternal twins had this too, but it turns out all we share are the same place of creation, the same family, the same parents. That was never enough for me - I wanted us to be the same. I wanted Emelia to be just like me, to be the perfect set of twins we were supposed to live up to being like. ("We're non-identical, dissimilar" Em read out from a book one morning, and I scoffed at her robotic dictionary translations. "Don't be stupid, Em. We're just the same.")

Heads turn when I walk in a room, either because they're all terrified I'll hear whispers about me floating in the air, or because they think I look nice. Again, I'll agree with the latter. Not based on fact, but I'd rather have the mindset that people like me as opposed to enjoy spreading nasty rumours containing the name Katia Fields around. It's important to look your best because you never know who you might meet or impress. I am not the wallflower Em has become, but the centre of attention.

And hell, I love every moment of it.

My skin has been subjected to sun and sweat, bronzing in the summer and cooling in the air-conditioned training centres. Hair always looking its best, the same colour brown as my eyes (which also have to look nice, as do my eyebrows, eyelashes, nose, pores, lips and everything else on my face.) Makeup hides the blackheads on my forehead that are furiously scrubbed at every night, eyeliner defining my deep set eyes and lipgloss hiding the dryness nervous biting causes. Two sets of earrings in each ear - one set for my 13th birthday, the other in secret last year. Mom and Dad are too busy to throw a punishment at me, or just don't care enough to notice. (I'm guessing the latter.)

Mom wasn't too impressed to get the call from school that I'd been suspended for smacking a girl in the head with a chair. Dad, on the other hand, was delighted. "That's my girl! he said, patting me on the back the moment I walked through the door. "The fighter herself Katia Fields! Look at that, not a single mark on her!" I smiled and took a bow, Mom furious but silent as usual. She never says the right things anyway, so I'd rather her not speak than say something disappointing.

"So tell me," Dad said round the table at a 'celebratory' dinner that evening. "What'd the bitch look like after my Kitty Kat was finished with her?"

The bitch had a swollen bruise the size of a rock on the side of her head, blood streaming from her caked-up face and sticking in her hair as they carried her off to the hospital. Worth it, I reckon, getting suspended to see her like that. Needless to say she kept her mouth shut around me when I saw her next. I revelled in my Father's praise and even more so in my Mother's detest. If she wasn't going to be there for me the way I needed her - the way Em was starting to act - then she could suffer in silence as the invisible battle between us raged on.

The difference between my mother and I is that I have a fire that needs to rage on, whereas she's learnt to keep hers secluded and controlled, dimmed down into nothing but flickering ashes. Sparks are long gone in her whilst they burst through my body, and I think she envies that. Sometimes my rage is anger (most of the time, if truth be told), sometimes it's passion, most of the time it's a roaring protective instinct for my social security and Emelia's safety. That line blurs often, merging into something I think is the same thing. Protect Em, get her to be like me. Be like me, protect Em. There's no difference.

history

When we were small and easily fooled I used to yell a lot of "Bumbo mumbo jimjams!" (kick the living shit out of him) and "Katia say-go!" (you have to ask Katia), but nowadays I tend to say "Katia sham" (I'm sorry) under quiet, defeated mutters and demand she takes the blame with me "Emzy sham-doo" (say you're sorry, too). We got to school and found that the other kids couldn't understand our own way of talking and it faded away ("Winsie-speak bye bye, vroom" - we don't speak like that anymore, stop it) as our bond began to disappear, too. Always speaking for her in class, fighting with the other kids that picked on her, holding her hand as we walked home from school ("Katia join Emzy boom boom" - don't let go of my hand or you'll get hurt). I spent my life looking after Emelia because she was all I had.

Our parents were never really there. They tried, of course, in their own way. Signing anything I needed to get me into training, handing over wads of cash so I could sneak to the back of the liquor store down-town where they sold alcohol and Ripred-knows what else to minors out of Peacekeeper sight, buying every lie I spun and blinded them with. Emelia was my rock, my precious little sister ("Only by one minute, Kat" she'd remind me and I'd roll my eyes and hug her, promising "I know, I know" even though I'd never admit it). My twin, who liked to hang out in the garden and tend to plants whilst I ran around with a bow and arrow pretending to hunt down children for a victory. My sister, who cried as I accidentally on-purpose trampled through her seeds whilst chasing invisible tributes and stained my clothes with her sadness as my arms wrapped around her and muttered "Katia sham, Katia sham. Emzy no booboo." (I'm sorry, I'm sorry, don't cry Emelia.) She shouldn't have planted them there, I told her. "Emzy sham-doo."

As much as I try to hold onto her, she's old enough to realise that we're not the same people even if I don't want to admit it. We don't even look the same, not really, but I need her so much. Because without her, I am alone and I don't think I can go through life without her toddling along beside me, naively holding my hand and refusing to let go. District 2 caught me in its limelight and the quest for popularity and at one point I think I left Em behind in the dust - or maybe I trampled her to the floor myself and left her needing me to lend a hand and pull her back up again. "Katia sham" I'd whisper as I helped her to her feet and dusted her down. "Emzy sham-doo."
