Our parents always told us that the dead won't miss what they can't use. The things we take are the same as trash, buried in a landfill for souls, and they should thank us for giving them new life, for taking care of things they're no longer able to. In Four, there's enough loose money jangling in people's pockets that they stay frivolous, even in death. It's like hunting for buried treasure and we Ripleys, we're pirates. Is that really so surprising in the ocean District?

Still, my brother Fitz doesn't like what we do. There are days when his giddy smile fades away and he can't stop himself from saying: "It's wrong, Nino. That's why we have to work in the dark." I can't tell if I think he's right or if I just don't like his implications that our ironically dead parents might have been wrong, but it tugs uncomfortably at something in my chest until I elbow him in the ribs and say something like: "We have to work in the dark so no one sees your face, Fitz, that's the only thing that's wrong."

Ask any girl in Four and they'll be quick to tell you how that's a blatant lie — Fitz is prettier than most of them. I've been told I am too, but I think that's mostly because of my hair: long and dark, with just enough curl to make a girl jealous. I don't look tough like Noah or effortlessly cool like Jude, I just try to roll with whatever life sends my way and somehow manage to keep my smile in tact, because, all jokes about our repo work aside, our mother taught me to always keep that before anything else.
