Official 89th Muttation List
Pitfall Lizards (crater basin, nesting marsh, Volcanic dunes) - Parts lizard, snake, and some trapdoor spider, this grotesque beast was originally designed to take out supply roads and other paths frequented by rebels. They were designed to dig networks of tunnels and caves under the specified area so it would collapse when enough weight was placed on it and perhaps kill the rebels involved with its lethal venom. However, these Lizards were deemed inefficient, given that their "traps" so to speak — nearly 25 feet deep, wide holes about two feet from the surface of the ground — did not always collapse, were not always dug in the right place, and were not always inhabited by a Pitfall Lizard to finish off any unfortunate being trapped. Like many of the muttations, the project was abandoned — however, few of the Lizards were actually found by the retrieval squads. These are completely inedible — even their bright orange eggs are poisonous. If you manage to get bitten, you have about three hours to live.
30 HP, Knife, inedible, poisonous
Corpse Nibblers (Throughout) - These large, maggot-like creatures were an experiment created by Capitol scientists as a means to clear out the corpses of dead muttations inside the arena. Unlike regular maggots, Corpse Nibblers are much larger, ranging anywhere from 12-24 inches long, with sharp teeth, beady eyes, and a squishy exterior. They become giant flies when they mature, and their eggs are laid near a source of food – usually a dead mutt that has been left alone to rot – and they will slowly roam around, sometimes in groups, until they find something to munch on. Unfortunately for the tributes, there’s not enough rotting muttation meat to go around, and the Nibblers will resort to attacking living creatures in order to survive, even occasionally resorting to picking apart their own comrades for nutrients. For this reason (and the fact that they’re horrifically huge), they’re not the kind of maggots that you might use to clean out a human wound, but they are edible, if you can get past the fact that they spend their entire lives writhing around rotting flesh.
5 HP, Small game Edible
Giant Mole (Crater basin, cornucopia, rusted garage) - The Giant Mole resembles a giant mole with a sharp claws and a large, fanning nose. About the size of a small elephant, they were created to sniff out rebels in their encampments (once coming across a scent, they can track it easily and swiftly). They have long, swift tongues lubricated with poison-containing saliva which temporarily stuns whomever they attack. For the Games, they’ve been made to be attracted to the scent of fresh blood…
20 HP, Knife and Stun, Inedible
Diamondfowl (cycad valley, nesting marsh, Crater Basin)- It was, by far, the most expensive luxury Capitol pet ever invented. Not settling for the beauty of a normal peacock, Capitol scientists and designers took it one step further by weaving the feathers of the Pavo with traces of diamond. The result was a truly magnificent creature, with an equally as magnificent price tag. However, when it was released to the market, it bombed, the price tag that came along with it pushing away even the most obsessed Capitolite. So it was recalled, killed off except for a select few. That is, until the 68th Games rolled around. Due to a rather eccentric and zany scientist, the Pavo has made it's (quite literally) triumphant return, except this time it's not just a pretty pet. To increase its lethality, the feather's in it's tail have been sharpened to the point of darts, which can be launched by the mutt at any threat by whipping its tail, all while looking beautiful.
20 HP, Large Game edible
Pocket Dragons (Research outpost, Cycad Valley) - Aptly named because of their small size, Pocket Dragons were created originally to be cheap merchandise for the Capitolites who wanted a plastic model of Flemeth the Blood Dragon. At first, Capitol merchants couldn’t keep these things on the shelves – after all, they were small, cheap, and easily directed by remote control – but even the best businessmen couldn’t have predicted how quickly the Pocket Dragon™ would rise in popularity. As time went on, the people of the Capitol wanted bigger and better upgrades, so newer models of the Pocket Dragon were continually created, until a savvy Capitol entrepreneur came forward with the latest version: a small, robotic dragon made of lightweight metal, with sleek wings, sharp claws, glowing red eyes, and an improved ability to spit fire. Plus, a remote control wasn’t needed; they could operate on their own. Sadly, the dragons also tended to have dangerous malfunctions, and had to be recalled immediately. Now, travelling in large packs, the Pocket Dragons move through the air and emit a constant high-pitched beeping sound, and will begin to smoke as the flames rush through their searing metal jaws.
7 HP, Knife and Fire, Inedible
Mercury Man Trap (Cornucopia, Research Outpost, Cycad Valley, Crater Basin) - Like with several different forms of muttations, the Man-Traps are simply improving on an already ideal design - in this case, taking a rare form of carnivorous plant and supersizing them to make them a threat to even the most physically imposing of tributes. While those that have recently fed may intimidate with their imposing stature, extending up to twelve feet into the air, the more ravenous and cunning of these plants may very cleverly disguise themselves on the floor of their habitat - ready and waiting for an unlucky specimen to wander into their jaws. Not poisonous. Not edible.
30 HP. Special Mechanic: If it lands two DGs in a row, it clamps down on its target with its jaws, dealing 5 damage each turn as it attempts to digest its target and also preventing it from attacking anyone else. (see Sinking Worms for examples)

Macaw (Cycad Valley, Volcanic Dunes, Research outpost, nested marsh) - Naturally beautiful, social birds, these are a legacy species from before the Uprising. These jungle-dwellers form societies not unlike human’s, with lifelong mates and a flock of family and friends. The Capitol hasn’t tinkered with them much. Their plumage is a bit more vibrant, perhaps a little iridescent, and their peaks blunter. Despite these modifications, rest assured that the Macaws can still make themselves known. They’ve even been known to shout "Hello!" upon attack.
Not poisonous. Edible. 12 HP, often attacks as a pair. Blunt rolls.

Dart Jaguars (Throughout)- Like many Capitol experiments, these beautiful mixes of jaguar and poison dart frog didn’t turn out the way they were supposed to. The idea was to create huge cats that could not only rip rebels to pieces, but also poison anyone who attempted to fight back. Unfortunately, no way could be found to make the cats excrete poison; the meat is inedible, and you’d better stay away from their bodily fluids, but their skin is safe to touch. They also lost the advantage of the jaguar’s camouflage; though their base coat is still tan, their spots have taken on the brilliant jewel-like colors of the frogs, making them gorgeous but easy to spot. Simple external contact with their poison is enough to paralyze any tribute for several hours; if it gets into your body, a painful death will follow within half an hour. (You probably won't make it that long, though, because most victims get torn apart and eaten long before that.)
Poisonous. Not edible. 30 HP. Knife Rolls.
Riverbats (Cornucopia, along waterways)- At first glance, this river otter/vampire bat hybrid appears to have inherited nothing from its flying ancestor - at about three and a half feet from head to tail, with a thick brown pelt that repels water, this creature appears to be almost an exact replica of the traditional otter. There are a few differences, though. For one, this muttation has a pair of sharp fangs that, although not poisonous, can still inflict a pretty mean bite. For another, these mutts are indeed blind, as are bats at birth. Also in common with bats, though, the Riverbat has the uncanny ability to echolocate, particularly beneath the water - tributes, be wary of stepping in, for a Riverbat will more likely than not find you and decide your flesh would be a tasty treat.
Not poisonous. Not edible. 20 HP. Knife Rolls.
Pathfinder Bugs (Throughout) - Pathfinder Bugs exist in swarms of hundreds. They are no bigger than a speck of dust and in daylight look almost identical to a swarm of gnats. The main difference is the sticky slime covering their entire bodies that gets left behind on anything they touch. The slime isn't toxic, but glows bright violet in the dark. Pathfinder Bugs are very attracted to the smell of sweat and will follow a large mammal around for days feeding off it. Not only do Pathfinder Bugs cause any human they're attached to to glow brightly in the dark, they also leave traces of their slime behind on anything around them they happen to touch. This creates a clear path to any human target.
Not poisonous. Not edible. N/A HP.
Dire Coyote (Volcanic Dunes, Research Outpost, Cycad Valley, Crater Basin)- A derivative breed from the hell hounds, these nasty little creations aren’t just canine. They were created for one purpose- to shred- and the jaws are all alligator, with sharp teeth and the muscles to slam their jaws closed on a piece of prey and toss it around until enough pieces fly off to kill it. The name did come from somewhere, though, and the majority of this mutt is in fact canine in origin. The creature looks like a monstrous wolf- strong fighter, enduring runner. Just to add to the disturbing factors, the eyes are more vein than sclera, turning them red. The ears are long at birth and need to be cropped to keep from flopping dangerously close to the teeth; that trait is from the bloodhound genetics that allow the Hounds to track their prey even when it seems impossible to do so. For this arena they have been bred to have fur the color of sand, the better to blend in with their surroundings. However, the most disconcerting difference between Hellhounds and Dire Coyotes is that the latter creatures howl non-stop whenever they have found prey.
35 HP. Not poisonous. No food classification.
Bloodfeaster (Nesting Marsh, Volcanic Dunes, Cornucopia, Crater Basin) - Using the DNA of a common house cat, a vampire bat and a leech these compact creatures are quite terrifying. They retained the slimy, black skin of a leech as well as its ability to breathe underwater. These cuddly creatures lack the ability to eat or digest anything other than the blood of humans or large game. Their mouths resemble large, gaping holes filled with rows of sharp white canines used to latch onto skin. Their saliva is not exactly a toxin but is rich with blood-thinning chemicals and bacteria - infecting said tribute with a short-term blood poisoning.
15 HP. Edible. Every deep gash infects tribute with blood poisoning, taking one tick of damage every other round for the duration of the battle. No antidote needed, effects will fade at the end of the day.
Ankle Biters (Throughout) - Small rodent-like creatures born from the splicing of hamster, canine and bat dna, which resemble chipmunks with webbing beneath their upper limbs. Originally created to be a household pet. They come in a variation of colors and patterns ranging from vibrant purple to pastel yellow. They are highly aggressive and territorial, with a cry resembling a beagle’s howl. They often sink their needle-sharp teeth into the flesh of those passing by their nests, which - while painful - are essentially harmless. They are known to be loyal creatures capable of developing strong bonds but very defiant and are by no means domestic.
5 hp. Edible.
Tar-moils (Rusted Garage)- The "Tar-moils" muttation was mostly a successful project by a Capitolite for controlling the number of wanderers that continued to grow. Originally designed to be a living trap to catch wanderers, rebels, and any other trespassers, these creatures would catch their targets and not let go. The problem with the Tar-moils that put them out of commission for years was the fact that the creatures were blind and could not discern who was trapped in their tar-like substance. Many of the people who were captured were Peacekeepers tracking down the trespassers. The Capitol took them back and kept them in cages for years, until a Gamemaker took notice of them. Tar-moils can be anywhere from the size of a small dog to a deer; these creatures secrete a tar-like substance from their body. Beneath the tar, they most closely resemble moles. Their sense of smell allows for them to get around. Generally, these creatures are harmless unless provoked or someone has gone too far into their territory. Most Tar-moils will have objects stuck to their tar as it is a stick substance meant to trap people. Some have even been seen with signs and weapons sticking out of them, some of which use those items as their attack. As a defense mechanism, the Tar-moils have been known to secrete more tar at their attacker in order to trap them and make their quick escape.
18 HP. Poisonous.

Ravensaur (Throughout)- Capitol scientists are always trying to one up one another. They push themselves farther than they should. They took a normal everyday raven and reverse engineered it. Spliced it’s DNA with a million other creatures. The strength of a bear, the claws of a falcon, the eyes of a snake that allow it to see in any lighting. It’s beak is serrated, built for tearing and ripping. Through it all, they let the animal keep it’s sleek black feathers. A beautiful coat for a Frankenstein of an animal.
35 HP. Knives (2 attacks one with beak the other with talons) Not edible.Mutt Contest WinnersRua - In a mid-60s effort by the Capitol to recreate now-extinct species of prehistoric and ancient creatures to refresh muttation ideas, a research team stumbled across the concept of Moa. Giant, flightless birds with legs the height of the average man and extraordinarily long necks. Able to run at incredible speeds, the Capitol team set about reconstructing this creature for it to be faster, stronger and more lethal - genetically re-constructing their diets from herbivores to carnivores. Rua feet boast giant claws able to rip into flesh and a beak with extra sharp teeth for crushing its prey's bones.

Brood Guardian (Nesting Marsh, Research Outpost)- Brood Guardians were created to be protectors. Living off the scraps of the other creatures, they are tasked with protecting the nests and the young left behind. They boast wingspans the size of two men, with razor sharp claws and teeth, but it mostly only uses those when eating. Its primary weapon is its tail: long and barbed like the serrated edge of a particularly evil-looking sword, and perfectly capable of stabbing its way through your chest, wrapping you up, and holding you tight while the guardian flies away with you. They are rather simple-minded creatures, simple enough to avoid so long as you don't go anywhere near the nests they're meant to be protecting. Then again, this is an arena. Maybe you're just hungry enough to try.
30 HP. Edible. Claws/teeth (knife), tail (spiked blunt)

Blood Warden (Nesting Marsh, Rusted Garage, Crater Basin, Volcanic Dunes) - They were designed with one goal in mind: apex predator. They're fearsome hunters, ruthless fighters. They're furious and their hunger knows no end. Like sharks- one of the many splices of DNA used to create them- they possess the ability to smell even trace amounts of blood from outrageous distances. Their teeth are capable of ripping a human limb from limb with ease, and here is the best part: their only, singular motivation is to kill. Their massive size can be a disadvantage to them if you play your cards right, but they're a lot smarter than the source material used to create them, so whatever you do, you better be ready for a fight.
45 HP, Inedible, Knife teeth. Two attacks per turn.

Marsabohr (Crater Basin, Cycad Valley, Volcanic Dunes, Cornucopia) - Based on a prehistoric bovine, long since their extinction, specifically designed to intimidate the most courageous at heart. A hulking mass of ivory fur, it's size is the first thing you'd notice. Standing at twice the size of any regular bull, it towers over even the tallest of men. The second thing you'd notice is it's foot-long tusks, pouring out of it's jaws and sharp as knife. Its hooves are the size of the average human face, the Marsabohr is able to kick with an enormous amount of force within its hooves. Normally docile creatures, mostly grazers, when threatened rage poisons their blood and makes them incredibly dangerous.
20 HP, Edible, Knives

Kangarex (Nesting Marsh, Research Outpost, Crater Basin, Cornucopia) - The Kangarex is an interesting creature, terrifying yet comical is was originally breed as a prestigious family pet. The richest of the rich would purchase this animal in an attempt to flaunt their wealth. Almost like a pissing contest "My Kangrex is bigger than yours, good sir!" "well mine jumps higher, my dear chap!" But the animals mated like rabbits, and soon the owners would find themselves over run by the mutts, the animal no longer suited to be a family pet, the capitol had to find other uses for the quickly multiplying pest.
