Pride and rage go hand in hand for a boy with nothing to fear but the truth. His father is a murderer, his sister a hellion, his mother absent and him, an addict. The fall came so quickly it almost felt like floating, nothing beneath his feet but air, nothing to grab onto but the fear. Dex tried so hard- tries. Sometimes, he must be the only one. Keeping it together is impossible 1,000 feet in the air, it all just seems to drift away with another hit or swig. 

All his money goes to his addictions or his mother, he used to be so much smarter. Quicker, when his father was taken away, he focused on graduating as soon as he could. Make it to the workforce, provide, provide, provide, but then he realized how cheap it was to do it all numb. Forget the anger and remember the bottle, he can't go a day sober after the last two years. He tries harder to hide it than he does to quit it, but that shame is always watching him something like a guardian, keeping him from diving off the cliff. 

What would they think? 

Terra knows, and he knows she knows as well. And he knows of her fights, coming home later than he does with fresh cuts and bloodied bandages. He was almost surprised to see her again after her stint in the detention center; embarrassed, almost, to welcome her back to such a shattered home. For months it was just him and Henry and their mother, she hardly ate or slept or worked, but she never stopped crying. He'd hear pleads between sobs, please don't avox my baby girl, but he'd just do what he does best and carry on like nothing ever happened. Unfeeling as he lit another blunt on the back porch, his baby brother in his arms. It'll all be okay.
