District 9 is not necessarily the district of beauty or calming walks.

Does not really seem to matter though, it is not like there are many options to get out of your house. Recently you have decided that it is time to figure out who you are. You refuse to be the same kind of crazy your mother is. Everyone expects to one day just hit a switch in your head and gone would be the days of levelheaded Icarus if you could even call yourself that in the first place.

So, you walk.

You walk everyday until you think you have freed yourself of all the confusing thoughts swarming your head as you try to determine your life for yourself. The list you recite in your head on your walks makes its way to the center of your mind and you start muttering to yourself under your breath.

1. You are smart, you have never forgotten a thing.

2. You are caring, you want the best for those that mean the most to you.

3. You are not your father; you won’t abandon mom when things get tough.

4. You still have not thought of a four.

Trying to figure out who you were was tougher than you could have ever imagined. You could not think of more than 4 things that defined you and only one did no revolve around someone else. How could someone as smart as you seem to be constantly lost in identify? Your shoulder length blond hair slightly flutters in the wind as you lose all sense of coherent thought once again in order to let your mind melt and fully take in your surroundings.

Despite district 9 not being much of a looker, it still held on to so many memories. Not just yours, but the ones of everyone who walked the street before. Every time you look at another concrete building dedicated to the peacekeepers, you cannot help but ask yourself what was there before. What memories were present in the location? You never quite understood how anyone can wipe just about everything away, you understood they wanted to install order and fear but is history not the perfect weapon to do so?

All you can do is shake off any feeling of confusion towards the capitol decision making and move on. It is not like anyone would want to hear your thoughts and ideas. It is also not like you would want them to in the first place. They are the very reason for all misfortune of your family, or at least the root of it all. Choices were still made by us and not them, at least not all of them.

You wish that there was anything you could desperately do. Turn back time to before you were born. Turn back time before there was a war. Reason with people. You never believed in violence, you always fought your battles with reason and rhyme. Why was it so hard for everyone else to see that it never had to come to this bloodshed, to this lose of family and mind for so many. You were not the only one fighting the mental repercussions the games have had on your family. Every year someone from nine was affected and another family had to suffer the fate of yours. Stop being selfish, Icarus, you are not the only one with struggles in this place. You can tell yourself to stop being angry all you wanted but those were just words easier thought than done.

You turn left on the corner.

The run-down building in front of you was once your elementary school.

Next to it was shiny new peacekeeper training academy.

Oh, the irony of it all.

The school was closed in the evening, all the kids were gone back to their families, but you like to go sit in the school yard and recount your days as a kid where everything was alright. As a child you did not know the pain of the world. There was something beautiful about your innocence back then and there was something calming about the memories of not knowing the pain you know now.

You were not the only one that seemed to have the same thought process, in the courtyard was a girl. Was she also seeking refuge from the cruel wrath of time?

you are taking refuge in the house of a family that knew exactly what you had gone through.

the bones healed, and so did parts of your heart that had been smashed by this boy. you laugh to yourself, a lot. even his own parents called him a boy. you had never thought that they change in industry would cause you to be thrown into an existential crisis.

it had been a couple weeks since you had seen him, and his parents had confirmed that it looked him he headed for the hills once he had seen too many peacekeepers. weeks had turned into months, and the freedom had been very welcomed for you. you wondered how long it would last. when would he come back?

his parents told you that he would probably never set foot back in the district, not unless he had a death wish. a welcomed sigh of relief had passed through your mouth, but you couldnt help but notice that his family didnt share the same sentiment.

blood was thicker then water of course.

but the fact that they still took you in, as broken as you were, was a stroke of good faith that you had not expected. that was, until things had started to get weird. they cleaned out the room that he had grown up in, they had found tape from one of the local vendors and began to put it over his face. they had kept deleting parts of him out of their lives as well.

and then one day, when you came home from a quick trip to the market, you had found a box sitting on the bed that had once been his.

inside you saw a picture of your mother and you instantly closed it.

when you inquired, his mother had told you that it was time for you to know more about your family.

you took a deep breath, decided that this was not the time for you to have one of your moments and simply took the box with you to clear your mind.

the ground had been broken near the one good park of district nine. the capitol had deemed it the best place to build the new academy dedicated to peacekeeper training. you didnt question their choice to make nine the hub for such a thing, but you were sure that you were not interested. you looked back to get a glimpse of the towering building, and you didnt even flinch.

you had been caressing the side of the box with your thumb, the crisp spring air hitting your face as your hair moved and glided in the air. you looked up to see a boy looking at you, and his hair was just as long as yours. you wondered exactly what he was doing here. did that really matter though?

you placed the box next you, a rock near by grabbed and placed on top of the lid. you knew how strong the wind was here. "this used to be only park i could come to yknow?" you are soft worded because that is who you want to be now. "what about you?"

that was a little more pointed.

A soft voice escaped the girl’s lips.

She held a box. You are guessing some sort of keepsake. You envied the people that held their memories in objects. You could never imagine a life where your memories were not on ever constant replay in your head. You could remember every word ever spoken to you; every action ever performed against you. All you were, were memories. Even the with the wind whistling, it felt like its notes would never escape your brain.

You wonder how it was like to relive a long-lost memory by the fingertip brush of an object. Rekindling with something that once possibly brought you so much joy but got lost in a forgetful mind. The happiness it could bring one when they would remember something as if it were for the first time. All you could have ever wanted was to experience that sensation once. Maybe she could describe it to you, then you could tuck it away in your brain and try to make it your own.

The chill of the late evening air adds to the ambience of this strange encounter. To you, it feels like this moment was a moment of understanding between two strangers trying to understand different concepts.

She places the box to the side with a stone on top in an attempt to protect it. Maybe from the wind, maybe from yourself. There was only really room for speculation in the situation. You continue to stare at her as if you were lost in your own thoughts. Her soft voice whispers alongside the wind into a perfect blend. Her eyes look like the keepers of a lot of sorrow. What was in that box that brought here in this state. What was the reason you were here? You could not really seem to put a word on it.

”This used to be the only park I could come to yknow?”

There, that was what brought you to the park. The escapism of it all, the only place you were able to come to as a child to seek refuge from your mother’s depression and your father’s helplessness. This was the place where your childhood was a childhood.

Your knees click as you squat down next to her, wrapping your arms around your lanky knees for warmth and stare back at her as you try to answer but your mouth seems to stay glued shut. She must think you’re a creep, a weird boy haunting the park messing in other people’s business. You want to say something, but it feels like the words are radiating from your eyes instead of your mouth. The feeling of confusion in the situation, the wanting to be alone but not really alone. You ruffle your brow before slowly opening your mouth to what it seems like a tell all confession to a stranger.

”I know. It is like a time capsule of happy memories. Or at least the ones that are not tied to growing up. Freedom to be a child, yknow? ” you tilted your head and shrugged repeating the same last word as hers. Hopefully she’ll understand, hopefully that silent mutual agreement is not just all in your mind.

Your turn to ask a question, it was only fair.

You nudge your head towards the box she placed the stone on top of. ”What’s that?”, a faint smile came along with the gentle voice.
