the second i'd stepped into the little train carriage i remembered:
i've been on a train before.
like, before.
and that's all it took to start crying again. blubbering, my prim and proper mother would call it. and she'd be right: i couldn't seem to find the off switch, not since they'd called my name. that moment had been the most surreal of my entire life. even more batshit crazy than being forceably moved from our home, from watching it be burnt down years later. those monumental changes i might not have understood but i'd seen them coming somehow.
but this? my name announced for all the district to hear but in completely the wrong context?
what kind of debut was this?!
the engine roared and the wheels squealed as the train bumped along the track. i remembered the motion, too, but not the smell. it smelled... old. damp. i kept rubbing my nose along the sleeve of my sweater but it was starting to get raw.
i took a deep breath out from my prone position on the couch which was really more of a bench. i couldn't keep crying; like physically that wasn't possible and i'd tried and also if i got too dehydrated i'd have a headache.
another big big breath in, hold it with eyes shut, slow release.
"water," i wheeze. and then, when i didn't hear anything instantly, i turn over dark curls, mashing them into the fabric, and lock eyes on my district partner. "i clearly need some water??"
