she is just as sharp as the stones that she can chisel away at.

its not like she had many competition from other girls that claimed they could do exactly what she could do. mac had a different type of strength to her, strength that had stemmed from a family dynamic that barely existed anymore. her father was rarely around, and her mom never slept at home. it wasnt like she was working either, but mac was always told to mind her own business.

its why she worked in the masonry business, because all of her anguish she harbored towards her family could be redirected to large stones that could still live if something sharp was stuck into them.

her group of friends had agreed that it was probably best that she had took her frustration out at work rather than everywhere else. they group of friends would be too small if mac had been hauled off to a detention center.

that was the only bonus about doing the work that she did. the boys werent afraid of her, and in fact, most of them had been her friends from a young age. mac had always been the toughest in the class, mostly because she was teased for having a birthmark on her cheek. there were many times when she would not walk into a room, shed been fighting into it.

her teachers always told her that she would get into a fight she couldnt win one day if she continued to pick fights with people that she had no business doing so. mac wouldnt pay them too much mind. they just wanted order in their classroom after all. mac was not responsible for something that the teachers could have done better at controlling. if they cared, they wouldnt let the bully continue, but they dont.

hence were mac's confidence had been born. shed like to think that shed thank them for being such shitty people, but she doesnt, and she wont. thanking them would only reinforce the fact that being silent is preferred in the face of treachery.

shed continue to sit there, smashing away at rocks just like the boys, until it was time for her to take a seat with them and joke around about silly stupid things that boys would joke about.

and she always felt like she was home.
