You had finally managed to escape Flynn. If he wasn't asking you about your bathing routine, he was pushing you on the techniques of survival. And it was only day 2. Armed with a slice of pizza, you wandered through the training center, trying to fight off the overwhelming feeling of panic that had begun to grow in the pit of your stomach as you took in each of the stations, the trainers, and the tributes lingering around them.

Stopping in the center of the training center, you began to count. The number 24 seemed so small when you saw it written on paper, however, as you took in your surroundings, you reached 24, and all of a sudden, the number seemed to loom over you.

"It's okay. Flynn did it. All I have to do is find a career, right?" You remembered Nanette Carter so clearly. The career who had taken pity on your brother. You were sure it was because she wouldn't have been able to stomach being the one to kill him. However, she had protected him each time, fought beside him instead of just leaving him to be picked off like prey. How had he managed to get her to pity him? It can't have been his charm because back in the day, Flynn was so dull that you had often fallen asleep halfway through his retellings of the stories of him and his dare gang.

You were about to take another generous bite of your slice of pizza when you saw Arcadia Lumiere-Fray, and your pizza was forgotten. You had seen her on YILP back in the day when you used to live with Flynn before everything happened. She was stunning, all blonde hair and fair skin. She was what you believed children in the Capitol aspired to be. She had a confidence about her that was enough to make almost anyone flustered, yourself included.

"H-hi, Arcadia!" You squeaked, suddenly forgetting about the number 24, about your pizza, about looking for a career to save you, about the fact that in a few weeks, she might be your angel of death.

Day 2 is the first day I set foot in the actual training centre. Whilst some of the other tributes had made a beeline straight for the weapons stations, I’d spent the first twenty-four hours in the Capitol taking my time exploring the sights. Refamiliarising myself with it all, if you will. It wasn’t like I needed to learn how to tie a torniquet. At this stage, it felt more important to get to know the other tributes – or rather, make it known that I wasn’t a threat to them.

Even if that statement wasn’t entirely truthful.

What I had been hoping to do was stick to the edges of the room and spend some time surveying the other kids before making my next move. But the world works in funny ways, always keeping me on my toes and giving me lessons in adaption. One minute you’re alone and psyching yourself up for yet another tedious yet necessary introduction with a lower district tribute, and the next you’re greeting a fangirling Victor’s sister.

She’s adorable, though, so I don’t mind!

“Nessa Garner! OMG hi! You know you’re practically royalty right? It’s SO good to meet you!”

It’s hard to ignore the dull stabbing pain right through the middle of my chest when I think too long about how unfair this entire situation seemed. It was one thing to have a family member be Reaped – and another for that person to be your own brother. And yet another for them to actually make it home alive. But to then have said brother watch you be sent away to your own death, and have there be nothing that anyone could do to stop it? Well, that was majorly fucked up. As if that poor family hadn’t gone through enough already.

This wasn’t the life she was destined for. It makes me sadder than I want to be, but I try not to let it show – for her sake or mine, I don’t really know.

I ogle the pizza in her hands, wondering if there was a policy against food in the training centre. It seemed kinda immoral, but I guess normal rules of etiquette don’t really apply to you a week before your scheduled televised death. “How’s the training going? I bet Flynn has a plan up his sleeve for you?”

My words feel heavy, lead in my mouth. The pain returns with them, crawling down my lungs, into the pit of my stomach. All I want to do is hug the poor girl in front of me – but for now, I restrain myself.

i always used to be into writing sort of modern abstract
lyricism stuff (that were like) slight vague indications of a feeling.

"Nessa Garner!" Oh my God, Arcadia Lumiere-Fray knew your name! It was so surreal that the "it girl" from District One knew your name. "OMG hi! You know you’re practically royalty, right?" Yeah right! You think to yourself as you try to focus, your lips pulling back into a grin so wide that your cheeks began to ache. "It’s SO good to meet you!" This had to be a dream, right? There was no way this was real, that Arcadia was excited to meet little ol you.

The sound of clashing metal drags you back into reality, a reminder of the circumstances surrounding your meeting.

"How’s the training going? I bet Flynn has a plan up his sleeve for you." Flynn had spent every moment he could trying to drill different survival strategies into you. He was constantly there, throwing more and more information at you, to the point where each night you felt like your head was going to explode. You had snapped at him more than once, and each time, you had instantly regretted it.

You knew he was only trying to protect you, to save you. And you knew you needed to be more patient with him, but it was hard when he got all bossy and started giving orders. Back home, you would have told him to go shove his orders where the sun doesn't shine. But here? You couldn't do that here because you needed him to know he did everything he could to save you.

You needed him to believe that because you were terrified that if he didn't, he would break. Not in the same ways as before, this time you weren't sure if they would be able to put him back together. After all, how many times could one person break until they were no longer fixable?

You're still lost for words when you notice her gaze lingering on the piece of pizza in your hands. Instantly, you offer it to her. "Do you want it?" You ask, ready to hand it to her. "I took a bite, but you can eat around it, or I can tear it off." You chuckle as you struggle to control your tangent.
