Something hums.
The vents, the lights, he couldn’t tell. The air is heavy and light, musky and sterile. The hallways are both too long and too short at once, distance nothing but a concept.
He’s been wandering alone for too long. The center before was clear-cut, a place of precise locations and pathways, but now it is a warren of twists and turns, bends and corners, red light soaking everything crimson, all the shadows dark and gnarled.
He should be afraid, but he only feels half-there, something between a boy and a part of the walls.
Something hums - and he joins in, gently, softly, trailing fingers along the smooth walls, entranced by the way the red lights seem to glow and stretch ad infinitum.
The distant ding of an elevator, however, snaps him back into focus.
Oh, that’s still working. Mateo creeps towards the sound, footfalls nothing but murmurs on the linoleum, and looks from the edge of a wall at the polished steel doors.
Then he averts his gaze towards the stairs.
Vin’s room is, what? Seven floors up? After looking left and right, he moves ahead and starts climbing the stairs, two steps at a time, a determined pace, counting all the while. By the name he has counted fourteen flights of stairs, he pauses in front of a door leading out to the hallway towards the suites.
He pictures silver hair matted with blood for a moment and shudders, taking an instinctive step back, but it’s too late.
The door to the district seven floor opens.
