Tavi was hovering; "You're hovering." He made sure to grin even though it hurt to chuckle. "You just trying to find some excuse to lean on me, is that it?" He limped across the dark stage, definitely and totally not using Tavi as a crutch. He thought about making a short joke, but has to stifle a groan as a shooting pain makes his vision swim and his stomach go all flip-floppy. He grips at Tavi's shirt; he can feel his heartbeat where his fist balls up his shirt, steady and strong where Arlo's fingers feel shaky and weak.

"They really should turn the lights on in here before someone falls off or something," Arlo pushes himself away then, giving a piss poor attempt at a twirl and a bow. "We could put on a show for them?" He raises a brow, swollen cheek bursting with a heat that made him want to pull at Tavi's clothes again.

"Don't you guys want a show?!" His voice echoed. Blood loss was giving him confidence, that had to be the only explanation.

It's not fun anymore.

Control slipping between my fingertips, brilliant bloodstains gone flaky and brown. I'm grinding my teeth, and all these useless worries between them. Arlo's off rambling fucking nonsense like it's his job, speaking to fill the silence. I'm guilty of the same, of course, but I'm not in the mood for it anymore so it's annoying. He's too warm, burning decay, and I think I'm scared. Not something I'm used to feeling. Not something I like.

This was all a miscalculation. Letting him stumble his way under my skin, more stake than splinter. I decided to care about him on a whim. I regret it now but I should have figured I would.

I stop at the edge of the stage when Arlo pushes away. He's all pathetic and wobbly, barely able to stand upright. Old bloodstains darken, evidence of the wounds pulling open. I try to busy myself with searching through the back rooms.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

The thoughts chafe. I try to smile, to laugh alongside him. To play this game we've both decided upon.

"Don't you guys want a show?!"

This is not caring. Storming across the stage and grabbing his face, gentle anger because I refuse to be another reason he is hurt, "Please. Stop." I look out at the stage, the cameras watching it. I whisper, for the first time, words meant for him and our captive audience, "I don't like to worry."

When he was little he stole his Mom's cigarettes. Not because he wanted to smoke them, but because he had this coloring book- "I thought they were crayons." -and he wanted to give her something that would help with her headaches. It's a pathetic little story and it didn't end with a waxy yellow sunset, the four of them holding hands, smiling at flowers with huge faces and rocks with moss for hair. She'd nearly killed us all that night when she left the stovetop blazing; she blamed Arlo for it, said he'd stolen her lighter, too.

It was always Arlo's fault.

Tavi took Arlo's face in his hands, fingers pulling at some of the crusted blood in his tangled hair- "Please. Stop." -eyes pleading in a way that made Arlo unable to hold his gaze for very long.

"You're breaking character." He tries to wriggle free, but Tavi doesn't give in.

"I don't like to worry."

It's only a whisper; it was only for Arlo to hear. Fuck.

He wants so badly to chalk all this up to the adrenaline finally leaving his system, but when he whispers back- "Me either." -with his forehead pressed into his, Arlo knows neither of them is lying.

Or at least he hoped.

"Come on then," Arlo says moving in the direction of the medical wing. "It's time for matching stitches."

"Okay, nope, I lied," Arlo goes red in the face, grimacing as he redirects himself toward the correct door. Y'know, the door that very obviously tells you that the medical center is on the other side. Y'know, because it's clearly labeled. What next? Were a bunch of keys going to jump out at him? Sure made sense to Arlo- living horror dummies, endless amounts of control panels, Tavi. Just Tavi Anemos. The boy from eight was so- he was just soooo-

Arlo was still having trouble placing his intentions. Did he want to kill him or kiss him? Both, probably, right? Arlo was pretty sure that's how he felt, too. Maybe. Damn. Arlo rubs a few flakes of blood from his fingertips as he makes his way across the floating walkways with Tavi close behind.

"Don't let me fall," Arlo finds himself brightening, even manages a wink and soft chuckle. "That'd be very lame-"

He gets cut off by the handrail that snaps under his weight. A few screws clatter to the ground below. "Okay, no for real, actually hold me, I think these walkways are trying to kill me."
