When the conglomeration disintegrated on contact, bits of mesh and metallic parts had flown around the crowded space around us. I had caught the majority of the flying shrapnel, my body inadvertently shielding Tigs as she crawls further down the tunnel. The cuts feel as if they barely graze my skin. I’m just grateful that this particular nightmare is over.

“Okay then,” I grunt out, struggling to follow Tigs down the chute. I kinda hate it: the feeling of being compressed. I wonder how Wolf could stand to live like this. Know she’d probably have been content to hide in the walls of the Arena for the entire Games if she could. But if the thinning air and uncomfortable press of the walls against my body is anything to go off, I know it’s a fate I would never survive.

I’m accepting my claustrophobia – I may very well die in this tunnel. It’s far too narrow for an agile performer to navigate through between production acts, so how on Earth were two girls carrying great big freaking murder weapons supposed to?!

“Where’s this thing lead?” I huff out in between anxious breaths. “Can you see anything?” Honestly, I can’t get out of here quick enough. Crawling through an abandoned underground tunnel?

What a terrible fucking idea.

You see the blood drip down from the back of your neck where the spider from hell had managed to get you, dripping down on the metallic surface of the pathway you found yourself in. The blood stains acting like a demonic cookie crumb for any predators who followed to help find you. Your unproportionally big weapon compared to your body sounding as you moved despite your best efforts to keep it silent. Whoever was above or below would know where you were, if you thought you would be able to hide in the hidden paths then you thought wrong. There was no sanctuary between the walls, only the making of a ghost story.

The air tightens between the two of your breaths, holding it tightly as you keep struggling to find a steady pace, calm your heart rate down, slow down your breathing, do not waste oxygen. You were being paranoid as you questioned your decision to go down the rabbit hole as it may not lead you to safety…not even for a moment.

Definitely not your brightest moment.

You glance back at Arcadia who seemed to suffer just as much as you did in the moment, but you do not apologise. There was no way the creatures would have been able to follow you here if you were struggling to make it through. Maybe you were being too harsh on yourself, maybe you were being too harsh on her. You had no problem asking Roe for help when the opportunity presented itself but why did asking Arcadia for assistance feel like you were failing? Was it the way she reminded you of the girls you would never be? You could not say, but it was not her fault and all she has ever been was helpful.

You sigh a sound of relief as you see cracks of fluorescent light peaking through in front of you. ”Get back, I think I found our way out.”, you warn as you take your blunt with force into the surface in front of you. The training area where you had fought before was on full display. You quickly crawl out, your eyes needing a moment to adjust to the surplus of light.

Deep within the walls of the Arena, everything is amplified. The blood pounding in my ears, the thrum of my pulse in my bones. Every laboured breath Tigs and I share sounds like a shout into the void. We share the air between us, preserving energy as best we can, yet I still feel the dizziness creeping in, a handshake of carbon monoxide. Just when it feels like I might actually pass out - from lack of fresh air, or anxiety, or a messy mixture of all of the above - Tigs stops, warning me to back up.

Her weapon crashes through metal and we’re free, “Oh thank god for that.” I tumble out of the tight space and let my glaive clatter to the floor, splaying my limbs dramatically as I stretch out the cramped muscles.

The Training Centre looks different when I’m not being shot at by a power-hungry Gamemaker. I try not to linger in one place too long; I don’t want to see the drying blood reminding me of what horrors have already transpired in here. What more is to come.

As if on cue, two cannons suddenly echo through the air. I jump up and spin around quickly to check on Tigs, immediately assuming the worst case scenario. Someone has jumped out of the shadows and stuck a knife in her back. Or she’s succumbed to the wound on her neck - and then, her death is on my hands. I mentally curse myself for not patching her up sooner. Like she would let me, anyway.

But she’s still here, still breathing, still standing, searching the room for anything of use to us. For now, we are okay.

You roll your eyes as Arcadia plops herself on the floor in the most melodramatic manner possible. It took some willpower for you to bite your tongue but instead you just let her be and move on to casing the training room.

Did the gamemakers have some superpowered interior design team just constantly changing the constellation of the rooms?

The arena seemed to be ever shifting and ever changing, just when you thought you might have had a grip on what was going on…no you did not. Your mind readjusts the map you had started to make in your head, adding in what you now know about the trapdoor connecting it to the training room. You draw in the idyllically placed table of plants, a sorted weapon rack, shelves stacked with supplies and was that a video tape player?

Two cannons sound.

Before you knew it Arcadia was all over you making sure you were still breathing. You raised your own fingers to your pulse…yup it was still there. You were still alive. You shake your head in disbelief at the paranoia the games had already instilled in you, unable to believe if
you were truly still breathing or if this was just one fucked up version of the afterlife.

Your fingers are stained red with your own blood and you turn to look at your partner. ”Hey umm Cad?” you proceed with caution on your next words, your fear of vulnerability leaking through. ”Do you mind helping with the cut on the back of my neck? I can’t see it and it might need some stitching up.” You give her a smile, an olive branch. If she was going to be your lifeline here, then you needed to start accepting her help.

I can’t help myself; I hug Tigs. The cannons are too loud. Too real. I need her solid form to keep me from completely succumbing to the rising pressure. I hope she feels the same.

“Hey, umm, Cad?” - honestly, I have no idea where all these nicknames came from, but they’re cute! - “Do you mind helping with the cut on the back of my neck?”

Oh!

“Yes! Yes, absolutely I can do that!” I immediately spring away from her and start rummaging through my bag for a spare string of bandages. I might not be an aspiring medic like her, but I’ve had my fair share of injuries and battle scars. One of my earliest memories was learning how to stitch up my own skin - the very basics of Career training. A tiny graze was a walk in the park.

It’s probably the only reason she’s actually trusting me - testing the waters, seeing just how hopeless I am before deciding if she can put her fate in my hands fully. But I’m too ecstatic to mind, working quickly to patch her up. My hands find a steady rhythm, gentle yet firm with the pressure they apply to the wound.

“There. Good as new.” I smile back at Tigs, hoping she approves. “Do you want to look around? Or should we move on...?” I don’t say what we’re both thinking - that red eyes and clicking mechanical parts are never too far away.

You raise your fingers again to the wound to try and examine the wound. You knew that you should not touch it, there was no point in risking an infection. Arcadia seemed to know what she was doing and you had to trust that she patched it up correctly. She was a career after all, you had questioned her training in the past but hopefully they had some sort of first aid training.

The sensation of blood running down the back of your neck had stopped, that was a sign that she had done the job. Good enough for the moment, if it needs touching up you would deal with that later. You nod your head in approval, unsure if you should give her a hug as well. Arcadia seemed to be big on hugs even if you were not. Instead you reach for her hand and give it a squeeze as you tilt your head in the direction of the plant filled table.

If there was anything you would be able to use in this room, it would be at that table.

”The plants, I can show you which ones we could use down the line.” you remark as you tug at her hand once again leading the way. ”I used to grow my own plants back in nine, didn’t have much money for medicine so we relied on teas and homemade ointments.” you explain away hoping she would trust your instincts on this. You have not given her much reason to believe that you could make appropriate choices. Maybe your combat strategy could use some work, but this you were sure of.

Tigs points out the plants station, which truthfully was never an area of expertise I’d taken much interest in. The thought of having to chew on a bunch of green leaves just to provide sustenance was quite unappealing to me. I’m half listening to her as she passes her gaze over the table of greenery. The sentiment of her story is more important to me than the actual botanical lesson she’s providing me.

It checks out that she would have had her own garden back home. Once again, the differences in our upbringing come to surface. If I’d ever had an ailment, I’d raid the medicine cabinet straight away for painkillers or cough syrup or antiseptic and be on my merry way to health.

When I think about that, it’s no surprise so many lower district Victors have come about in recent times. They come from a different world. They know how to survive better than most. I feel my respect for Tigs growing even more.

Still, I’m kinda bored at her lesson on poisonous plants. I sneak away in what I hope is a stealthily polite manner, approaching a glowing red door which had caught my attention as soon as we’d stumbled into the room.

“SECURITY SYSTEMS ENGAGED. PLEASE PRESENT ACCESS MATERIALS.”

Hm.

I rummage through my bag once again and pull out the keycard I’d found the day before. I hold it to the sensor, praying it won’t accidentally trigger more laser pointers and torture.

Beep!

The doors slide open slowly, and I peer into the darkness. The red glow is brighter in here; as I squint my eyes I can make out shadows of objects - weapons, bags, drones, electronics. “Hey Tigs, come here a moment? I think I found something better than plants.”

Like that would be hard to do.

You may have loved the plants and your garden, they may have been your strong suit but it most definitely was not Arcadia’s, yet you could not really as you got lost in your own excitement and trail of thought. In some sense Arcadia reminded you of Icarus, could not give a flying fuck about what you had to say but would let you talk about something as long as it made you happy. Here for a moment's time, you felt at ease, there was no tension as you ran your hands along the table carefully picking up the Azalea flowers. You made a mental note that if you ever saw Roe again you would let him know the next time he threw flowers at you, you would prefer it would be these ones.

Arcadia’s voice rings from across the training room, you were so lost in your monologue that you did not notice that she had wandered off. Her head was peaking into the game makers rooms, the ones they used to watch your cage fights and observe during your time. She was right, that room probably had more interesting things than the plants although you knew just how much damage you could cause with flora and so did the game makers.

”Interesting sure…”, you hesitated. Would the gamemakers ever be present in these rooms during the games? Or did they have a new nesting place to come up with their hellish ideas. You did not want to stick around long enough to find out. You flick on the lights illuminating the room exposing the stacked shelves. ”Grab what you can and lets get out of here”.
