In the corner of the room, something glows. I approach it when it beckons me over, and it becomes clear very quickly that I’m staring into a barrel of toxic waste. I mean, it kinda seems unsafe to just have that lying around in the open. I should probably leave before the radiation starts to make a home inside of me.

An involuntary shiver runs down my back at that thought. I see Vin and Mateo carrying Roe, hunched and pale, succumbing to the toxins in his bloodstream. The memory is dotted with images of crushed leaves and pulp-coated blades. The stench of rotten fruit crawls onto my tongue.

This world is cruel. Its secrets unravel to me.
