Between one breath and the next, the storms stops blowing and the ocean calms. Still waters, the breath in my chest comes to me haphazardly, catching on my throat like a fish on a hook. If the place wasn't shredded, I might believe nothing had happened here in the first place.
The pier is still is still a shambling mess of broken wood though, support beams now floating in the water rather than holding up large sections of the pier. There had been a collection of different nets in the water also; farms, Laney had called them. Not that I really understood her. I'd sort of thought you could only farm on land, but she claimed it's just like having a cow farm, except they're for different kinds of fish. Jokes on her though, cause I don't know shit about cow farming either.
It's hard not to turn towards the boy from Eleven and wrap my hands around his slim neck. Despite the warmth in the air, gooseflesh rises all over my body at the thought of his carotid under my thumb, grief twisting and turning deep in my belly.

I can't hear anything else but this, my own voice on repeat in the back of my head. The inflection changing every time. Mateo should've protected his district partner, his piece of home. He did something terrible, and now my friend is dead.
But—a hand outstretched.
I kick the loose boards scattered along the damp pier, and the silence finally breaks, planks dropping into still water with a loud splash. When my voice breaks across the room, it's with a shout. I bet they hear the scream that rips through me all the way in Twelve.
