BANANA OPPENHEIMER

There's a rush that fills her veins just before stepping into the simulator. Like the first flush of champagne or the cozy warmth of a tiny pill popped after dark. For a second she wonders if that's it, if that's the sort of ride she's signed up for, and then the simulator whistles and reality shifts.

She's more than a little surprised to find herself back, wayyyy back, at the prestigious Academie Mode in the heart of the Capitol. Outside the warehouse windows the Capitol is bleak; it's been snowing and even the cheery holiday lights can't quite compete with the cold grey.

Inside, though, is a riot of color and energy.

A boy about her age, hollering over his shoulder at someone else, dumps a stack of garlands in her arms. "Hi, can you tell me -?" But that's all she can manage before he rushes off to the next sewing station. For a second Banana considers stitching them together to make a dress but at the last moment decides the windows need more festive cheer.

She's not the only one drawn to the dreary day. There's a brunette looking outside. Banana heaves the pile of garlands onto the sill and then, prepared to introduce herself, sticks out a hand.

"Oh!" She gasps in recognition.

She steps through time like moving through a silk veil. The whirring of the machine fades into the chatter of the Académie Mode in the full swing of the holiday season, tinsel garlands and poinsettia flowers plastered on every still surface. Bambi Salcedo has not walked these halls in many years, but now, it feels as if she has never left them. There's an itch in the back of her brain, a genuine worry that maybe she's late to turn in her midterm project, but she quiets the anxiety and tries to enjoy the simulation for what it is.

A distraction from reality.

Tucking a strand of brown hair behind her ear, she wanders through the past, smiling at memories unfolding around her. Glimpses of classrooms she nearly forgot about, posters with the smiling faces of stylists that have already retired in the present, herself included. There's the smell of pastries wafting through the space, a tradition supplied by one of the deluxe bakeries that has since closed down on Style Street. She can almost taste the lingering flavor of strawberry filling.

Lost in her wonder, she nearly bumps into a fair-haired girl who seems to be looking for guidance of her own. "Hi, can you tell me-," the question breaks the second their eyes meet, mutual looks of recognition and shock lighting up their features. "Oh!" It would seem she is not the only woman of flesh and blood exploring this recollection made of data and codes. She returns a warm smile, her head tilting to the side playfully.

"Banana Oppenheimer, as I live and breathe." She chuckles a bit at the irony, taking the hand offered to her in greeting. "Or I suppose I should say, as I dream. You're as much a vision here as you are in the real world."
