PARSON CHAM

Another year of welcoming two filled coffins and a victor from another District. If only Flynn Garner had won a few years later, at least I could have had a victor on my list of achievements during my first term in office. The gold that comes with having one of them come back alive would resolve a lot of the District’s issues, but it will all go to Twelve.

Last year’s decorations are hung on the walls of the Justice Building, everyone is wearing their best clothes just so we can welcome Marik Shadow to this gray District that has put the effort in to pin a smile on its face.

I am involved more than I should be. It is usually just a speech that is required from the mayor and then attendance at dinner, but we are missing someone…so I am taking on a few extra duties.

After mine and Marik’s speeches in the town square, the entourage crams inside of the justice building and it is my chance to speak to this kid that is getting flaunted by everyone in Panem. I survived the games, and I am glad it didn’t come with all this extra bullshit that the victors have to deal with. A life of being left alone, well, before I took on the role of mayor.

”Welcome to District Six, Marik!” I say as I approach the fresh victor, I have not figured out if he is one of these messed up ones yet. ”Sorry you have to deal with me, usually a victor would be taking you on this tour but,” I open up my arms, looking around for that curly haired bastard, ”he is not here! I will be dropping you off at Teddy Ursa’s house though for dinner, so you will be able to meet a fellow victor later. Now tell me, what do they teach you in District Twelve about medicine?”

It is hard being in district six. Nessa is from here, and she treated me like a normal human being. She was the closest person to a friend I had in the arena. I did almost everything alone, but sometimes when I needed it the most, she had my back. Nessa helped me, and while I'm grateful I didn't have to fight her, I miss her. I miss talking to her. I miss interacting with her. I miss the day we destroyed things together out of anguish the day I made my first kill. Nessa seemed to understand me some, and I'll never be able to repay her for it. All I can do is honor her life like I honor everyone else in the arena. I'll carry twenty-three souls for a while, but I refuse to let them weigh me down.

I just take a look around before heading out onto the stage to give my speech. This time it's tough to stick to the notecards that have been prepared for me, but I don't stray from them. I'm now a puppet, and I must behave so I don't endanger my family. When I'm done, I head back into the justice building where I'm met by the mayor. "Welcome to district six, Marik!" I just smile and nod my head. He keeps on talking, and I understand why he must be sad. Flynn lost two people he was related to this game, and I can't imagine how he feels right now. I nod my head again, but when he asks me what I know about medicine I'm caught off guard.

I don't know much about medicine except what I learned from first aid in the hunger games. First aid saved my life so many times. It helped me be the best version of myself, and it helped me stay alive through the entire game. Of course, I could know more, but all I can do is shrug my shoulders. "Thank you for this. I look forward to the dinner and meeting Teddy." I keep thinking about medicine and wondering if there's anything I can learn from it. Is there anything I can learn here? I know they have many hospitals. Maybe they can teach me. "I know first aid from the hunger games. Other than that, not much." Not sure what else to say, but maybe he can help me.

It has been fifteen years since I was in the arena, three quell twists later and it is still going with no end in sight. The 100th is another mayor’s term away and boy, the rumours are a whole lot of whiplash. An adult reaping pool, a victor reaping pool or even total annihilation of all the districts. None of those options have a happy ending for me. And now Georgie is amongst the reaping pool, and they’ve already done the whole bringing tributes back from the dead twist. I just hope the Capitol is nostalgic of its own creations on the 20th anniversary of my games.

I’ll give it to Marik though, surviving the arena mostly alone. I could barely get through a few days before having my throat slit and I had an entire alliance surrounding me. Doesn’t help that my claim to fame was being the piss boy and fucking one of my allies, there was a lot of baggage in that vineyard arena. I wonder what kind of miserable life Angel is living right now in Seven, that guy I scared away. I still think about him. Good and bad thoughts.

”So this tour is going to be fucking boring for you.” I say, looking down at the agenda printed on the paper that is screwed up in my hand. ”Blessing Fenwick’s Hospital, a rose plague laboratory and a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant…” I read off the list, there’s Dixon’s Diner scribbled out on it. ”The grand opening of a new activity center, oh wow they’re letting you cut the tape…great. All of this in one day!” Just reading it makes me feel exhausted.

”Lets get through all of this as fast as we can, all they want is pictures. The quicker we get it done, the quicker we can get sat down around Teddy’s table!”

I never asked for any of this to happen, and all I was trying to do was be honest. Maybe it's a way for me to learn, to figure more out about everything. It can still be interesting." I try to smile, but I realize it might not be doing any good.

A heavy sigh leaves my chest, and I listen as he talks about the various locations we're going to see, and apparently I get to cut the ribbon to something. That's a bit exciting I suppose, but I'm really looking forward to meeting Teddy and having a dinner. I'm the newest addition to the victor family, and I'm sure everyone wants to get to know me, but I feel bad for Flynn. I can't imagine losing two people I love dearly in the hunger games. I can't imagine being the mentor to them and failing them. I don't ever want to imagine it, yet my sister is young enough. I could always see her in the games, and it's terrifying to me. For now, though, I'm going to focus on what's going on around me.

"I'm excited to learn more about the district." I look around and take it all in, and I follow his lead. I have to behave. I have to make sure I play the part, but I really want to just be myself for once without fear of anything else. It's hard being in the spotlight, but everyone sees me, everyone has their eyes on me, and I feel like one wrong move will send them spiraling. I'm not here to bring the dead back to life because I can't do that, but I can spread their memory and make sure their legacy isn't forgotten. I just want to lay low, and that's the best thing to do here. "Where are we off to first?" I try my best to sound enthusiastic about it all, but I just want to go home and hide for a little so nobody can find me.
