after the fall, pt. 1 ✘ gunner &. izzy, day 1

A dull thud comes from beyond the cabin’s walls.

It could have been snow, could have been a faulty roof tile. But it could also be Rhys trying to sneak in again, or someone else attempting the same. Vultures, really. He respects the gusto, and yet he hefts up his new shotgun - now lovingly named Grudge - with a hard stare at his career bitch, then a harder stare at his one-eyed monster.

“To prove I didn’t run,” he intones, baring too much teeth in a mockery of a grin, “I’ll go ahead take care of whatever that is.”

He finds the back door. Gun in hand, the trails of blood that greet him from the snow are enough to whet the appetite of his inner hunter, but his eyes remain on the prize: a fallen body upon the snow, their limbs akimbo. And two other bodies, too. He catches Isolde while the other is the middle of hauling her ass up, groaning, and next to her, the girl from Ten at Lucky’s swim meet.

His gaze lightens at first, darkens the next.

“New friend?” he asks with a hollow snicker. “And here I thought we were becoming the bestest of pals, dude.”

The shotgun clicks a loud warning as he loads it. “Got a shotgun and two careers in there,” he just a chin towards the cabin, “so I suggest you start running. Oh, wait.” He then looks down at who recognizes now as no other than Inga Vanas, a fellow lover of heights.

“Three careers. The odds are like, really, really fucked.”

A pause. It takes a moment for everything to settle in place, but a laugh escapes him as a white puff when it does. “Wait, did one of you just push the other one out the window?” His grin sharpens, a slice of amused malice. “That’s kind of fucking metal. Respect.”
