"Stupid, stupid, STUPID!"
Lucky spoke to the cold corpse of Gunner Azarova, hoping his soul could still hear him. He sat at the rift between ice and ocean sprawled out next to him. Earlier, as he pulled Gunner away from Marcellus and the bloody scene, the aircrafts hovered overhead, seeking to take his dead friend away. He shielded Gunner from their grasp until they moved on. He simply needed more time.
"I frickin' hate you. I told you to run, why didn't you listen?"
He got three weeks with the boy when he wanted three lifetimes. Lucky knew everything four nights ago, but knew nothing now. Why did he make it so impossible to react in the mines? Why didn't he just say something?
"I want you– back, I want you back. You never answered my questions." Questions he never got the chance to ask.
Lucky stirred his spear in the icy body of water, wiping it clean of Marcellus's blood. Maybe he should have speared Juno's heart instead and plucked it out. Eye for eye or something. Torn heart for torn heart. The shock paralyzed him. His kill, it was fine, but seeing Gunner fall, too. It stunned him. The Career Academy was clear about one thing: never stop fighting. Lose an arm? Keep fighting. Lose an ally? Keep fighting. If a god descends from the clouds and promises you godhood? Keep fighting (although if that did happen, Lucky and Bam made a promise to one another… totally take godhood. The other wouldn't mind.)
"I think I like you, whatever that's worth." finished with his cleaning, Lucky laid back down beside Gunner. The temperatures wore his body bone cold in a matter of minutes. "You like me too, I think."
He rolled onto his stomach and rested inches from him. "But, like, I like Rita too, you know? So it's tough." Lucky completely unfurled, legs kicking from behind. It felt nice to speak his mind and not get pushback, no matter how endearing and cute it was. He wanted to hug and kiss them both, but one was dead and the other was who-the-hell-knows where. Lucky settled for a fantasy of the three of them in his daydream.
"I have to go find Xylia now, kay? Root me on, send me a sign, I dunno."
He gathered his things and knelt beside him for one last time. It hurt, but he couldn't stay forever. The airfacts soared above like six crows, ready to take him once Lucky got far enough away. "And here, because I always keep my promises." Lucky tugged at his eyepatch, ripping it off and looking directly down at Gunner's corpse. Underneath was nothingness, a smooth patch of skin with no muscle to move it. He stared for about twenty seconds, hoping the idiot's ghost could see him and relish in the sight. He totally would.
Lucky pulled the patch down jogged into the fog in the direction that Xylia said she'd be.

He pivoted around in the ice and ran back. I'll take care of you, a promise so broken that nothing in the world could remedy it. Lucky fought through the fog, calling out to him. GUNNER! GUNNER! When he made it back to the spot where he laid Gunner Azarova, all thats left of him was skids of blood dragged across the ice.
The aircrafts took him before he could say sorry.
Unease lurked within Lucky that he would never be forgiven.
