Mud squelching under her boots as the earth continued to melt, Xov stood there blinking, unsure if she was seeing things. A giant white bear with a saddle on it. She looked around to see if the bear belonged to anyone, then down at Gus, who was busy munching the fresh grass that had seemingly emerged overnight.
”D’you know this guy?”
His blank expression told her… nothing.
Oh, to be a tiny buffalo chewing his cud while the world burned. Xov sighed.
She had never ridden anything living except those ponies at the fair that cost a coin to amble around in a circle. The two couldn’t be more different. But this thing seemed slow enough, and if what she had seen so far was any indication, the ugly creatures were the only bloodthirsty ones in this place. Maybe the Gamemakers had thrown this one in to reach a younger audience in the capitol.
”I’m guessing you don’t speak polar bear, do you?” she asked Gus. He totally ignored her, still absorbed in the greenery. ”Ooookay then.”
She stepped cautiously toward the polar bear, palms turned upwards as a gesture of peace. ”Hey there big guy. I won’t hurt you.”
