After taking some feedback, I am ready to put up another, hopefully better oneshot. This one stars my favorite charrie, Luna Whitestone! Feedback both good and bad (bad especially, please) is very welcome!
As dawn aproaches, my knife shines in the pink and blue lights. The clouds look like they've been waterpainted onto the sky. The setting is a forest of trees so tall I can't see the tops and trunks so thick five people in a circle probably couldn't wrap their arms around it. It's beautiful, or at least it would be, if I didn't know that it was made by the hands of the Capitol. The Capitol. They're the reason I'm in this mess.
I stand still as a statue for the Reaping. My long, glittering black dress falls down in waves. My insides are ice cold. And then I hear my name being called. And after that, I go numb. I go completely deaf, unable to hear a thing as I walk slowly towards the stage.
The girl in front of me is about my age, maybe a little older. Her frizzy hair dangles in her face, funny compared to my black hair which I've managed to keep neat all these days. Her eyes are wild, too, starig me down in hatred. Her sword glints menacingly.
"I don't want to fight you," I state simply, my midnight eyes staring cooly into hers.
"Of course you don't!" she snaps, swinging her sword towards me. I easily dodge. "You fear me!"
I shake my head. "I don't fear you. I've never feared you. More of... anticipated you."
I stand in the open, fighting and defeating all who see me, waiting for the one girl I know is coming...
"I hate you!" she screeches, diving towards me with her sword. It brushes my arm, leaving a thin and shallow cut. It stings, but I don't mind. "You killed him!"
"I had no choice!" I say calmly. "He was dying, Maria. Dying! Forga got him through the stomach, and there was nothing I could do. He was suffering. I had to end his pain."
"You did it out of hatred and greed!" Maria shouts. "I loved him and you killed him! You killed Corez!"
"He told me to tell you it's not my fault," I say. "And... he made me promise something."
I leap forwards, knocking her sword easily away and knocking her over. She lays, shaking, on the ground.
"Listen closely," I say. "Corez told me there was one thing I had to promise before he forgave me. And I did. And I intend to keep that promise."
And suddenly, the knife plunges through the delicate skin. Pain blossoms in my leg from whee the knife stays. It'll finish me fast.
"I promised him I wouldn't harm you," I say, meeting her look of horror with a satisfied smile.
"He... he cared about me?"
"More than anything," I say matter of factly. "He loved you, Maria. And he didn't want you to die here."
"So he made you kill yourself," she concludes.
"No, that was my choice," I say. "You know, I'm not totally a monster."
She stares.
I drop to the ground. The pain... it's...
Red. Red like the sky as the sun rises. Red like the blood that's on my leg. Red like her broken heart.
"I'll give him your love," I say, like a passing comment.
And those are my last words.
