So.

Stone making.

Perhaps it was a good thing, perhaps it wasn't, but either way, it didn't effect Grind. With mountains as a backdrop, he had been taken to a market by his uncle, who'd raised him since the age of 9. They didn't go anywhere without making it a way to train for the Games. This time, his uncle, Allen, had told him to insult as many people as possible, and no matter their reaction, not let it effect his mood.

So, seeing the first person, as Allen eyed a bushel of apples, Grind muttered, "Hey, ugly."

Maia Grayson woke up too late. The sun had already risen past the horizon, marking the start of the day. The light filtered in through her window, across the polished floor, onto her fuzzy carpet. And she, Maia Grayson, was still in bed. Not training. Not fighting dummies with her sword, or real people. Not at all. She was lying in her bed.

Instantly, she leapt up, and grabbed her clothes, yanking them on, before remembering she still had her pajamas on. Finally, once she'd gotten that straightened out, she clattered downstairs, making quite a racket, and came face-to-face with her sister dearest, Valora.

"Hey, sis!" She said, brightly, her beautiful blue eyes wide, each individual eyelash clothed in black mascara, and her curvy body was squeezed into a too tight dress, her long, tan, smooth legs visible. It made Maia sick. "Off to training?" She blinked her eyes, innocently, knowing all too well that Maia was late.

"Back off." Maia told her, darkly, pushing past her to get into the kitchen. She swung open the cabinets, pulled out a protein bar, and turned to go. Valora blocked her way.

"Don't be in such a hurry." She said, smiling with white teeth. "Stress is not good for your skin!" Maia snorted, and pushed her sister away again.

"Like I care." She spat, stomping into the living room and grabbing her boots. Valora followed her. Some people could not take a hint...Maia eyed her sister with distaste. Her beautiful, older sister...so goddamn perfect, wasn't she? "What are you doing here anyway?" Maia demanded to know. "I thought you were saying with your boyfriend, what's his name, Anthony?"

"Aaron." Valora beamed, her eyes widening further. "Well, I came to ask mother to borrow one of her dresses. We're going on a date tonight, and-" Valora leaned in close to her sister, so she could smell her minty breath, and whispered, "I think he might propose tonight! Isn't that fabulous?"

"Disgusting." Maia snapped, and stood, her boots on, and she grabbed her coat. "I'm leaving. Have fun with Andy."

"Aaron, honey!" Valora called, not missing a beat, as Maia went towards the door. "And brush your hair, for pete's sake, you look like a mess! See ya, love!"

Maia spat on the ground, to show her displeasure, and groped around her in coat's pocket for her long, bronze dagger. Daggers weren't generally her thing, swords were, but it was always nice to have one hand on a weapon at all times. It was comforting.

She stomped into the market place, throwing dirty looks at anyone who passed her by, and keeping a tight hold on her dagger. The sounds of the market, haggling, footsteps, arguing swirled around her, none of it standing out, until one voice hit her,

"Hey, ugly."

Maia wheeled around and saw him. Grind Delhomme. She knew him. Another Career just like her. The only difference was she could rip him to pieces right now, she was so annoyed.

Lightning fast, hardly thinking, she pulled her dagger out, and forced it underneath his chin. Baring her teeth, she leaned in close to him, her Career training instincts kicking in. "Wanna repeat that?" She growled.

Allen had not seen the dagger. He'd been too busy throwing the apples in the air and catching them. He'd said that it was a test to see if they were good to eat. He had said if he caught them and they bruised, then they'd be deemed good enough to burn.

Grind, on the other hand, had seen the dagger. The silver metal that killed so many in the Games now threatened to kill him. He hadn't realized who the dagger holder really was until he had really opened his eyes. Maia Greyson. She was just another Career, just like Grind, even if Grind's training was more mentally focused than physical.

However, the initial fear was quickly covered by the laughs that he had falsely created. He'd follow those guidelines that Allen had gave him, and so Grind put his finger up to the dagger and slid it out from under his chin. "Oh, well, Maia. Just wanted to be obvious, er, honest, is all! No need to draw blood."

"Ha ha." She said, dryly, as he pushed her dagger away. "You think you're so funny, don't you?" She stowed her dagger away into her coat, still keeping a firm grip on it.

Secretly, she was glad for the comment. It was miles away from the usual stuff she had to put up with, other than Valora's "helpful" words. She was known as the girl who'd given up her chance. As the girl who'd let a volunteer take her place in the Reaping. She was thought to be weak.

Those were snide comments that were written down and passed to her in school, whispered if she made a wrong move in training, and laughed when she lashed out. There was no escape from it. She would be forever known as the girl who'd given up. As the one who shouldn't even be called a Career.

So, this comment, ugly, should come as a reassurance, right? Maia still, subconsciously, flattened her short, uneven hair. The jet black hair dye was still holding up, her own dark brown tresses hidden underneath. Valora could be the pretty one. She was 20, she didn't need to train, so she could be pretty all she wanted. She, Maia, had to be the Career. She had to train, in case she ever got her chance again...

Maia glanced at the boy's companion, his uncle, she knew, tossing apples into the air, like an idiot. Most likely, he was Grind's trainer, or something of the sort, someone who helped him train. Maia had no one like that. Her parents were often busy. Her father trained future Peacekeepers, and could never be bothered to help train his screw-up daughter. And like hell she'd ask Valora...

It was quite a sight to see a Career in the marketplace with their trainer at such a late hour in the morning. Why weren't they training? For the same reason as her? Had they slept in? "What are you doing here anyway?" Maia asked, coldly, her curiosity getting ahead of her. She waved her hand around at the marketplace, dismissively. "Why not training?"

Of course it relieved him! There was a dagger under his neck, threatening for his life to end, and now the dagger was safely back at Maia's side. "Ah. See. I told you. You'd not kill anyone ever." Perhaps it wasn't the smartest thing to say, but it had been said, and Grind wasn't one to take back things that he'd spoken, because most of the time, it was what was on his mind.

Maia then commenced to ask what Grind was doing in the bustling marketplace, and he explained that his uncle was there to fetch some food for the house that they lived in, considering that the cabinets were getting too empty. And when she asked why Grind wasn't training, he replied, "Who said I wasn't?"

"Ah. See. I told you. You'd not kill anyone ever."

Those words hung in her ears, a swarm of bees, buzzing around, stinging her flesh. She could kill someone...she could...couldn't she? Another voice in her head interrupted, then why did you step down from the Games? You had every chance, and you let it all go...all of it, down the drain...stop, stop, stop! Maia shook her head to clear her mind, angry at the voices, the voices of reason in her head, and looked up at Grind, to retort, but he'd already moved onto other things, explaining his food situation. And training?

"Who said I wasn't?"

She glared at him, because there was no possible way he could be training here in the market place. He was just trying to annoy her...and it was working. Every thing was annoying her, ever since she'd woken up late. Everything, even the pregnant woman toddling down the street towards them, getting into everyone's way. Even that stupid trainer, tossing the apples into the air. Everything, ever since this morning when she saw Valora. Her good, perfect sister. She was always the better one at training it seemed. When they actually, somewhat, liked each other, and worked together, she always shined.

It was, look at Valora, she knew exactly what to do in that situation, and she can ever provide for herself too. And then, there was her, Maia...oh, look at that one...she's amazing with her sword...and...not much else...

That's gonna change, Maia woke up every day, telling herself that. Whenever she awoke from a nightmare, filled with staring people, and her name, being called over and over, echoing, but she wasn't moving...she was hiding...That's going to change...

So, she smirked at Grind, fingering the sharp blade of her dagger, concealed in her coat. It wasn't much a secret anymore, but still, she liked the edge it gave her. "Training, huh?" She spat, still maintaining her sneer. "Well, I guess I am too, and-" She glanced around, at his trainer, at the people in the market, walking about, minding their own business, and then to the training building, farther down the road, its door continuously being thrown open by kids going inside. "and," She said, finally, turning back to him, her smile widening. "I'm doing a better job than you, don't ya think?"
